The ladies in my family get together every fall to make applesauce. Normally I join them but I missed out this year due to small humans being ill, so they made mine for me. I’ve never seen it separate before… What could have caused this? (And is it still fine to eat/will it keep?)
Thanks y’all.

I’m not sure why it separated but those don’t look like new lids to me and it doesn’t appear the rims were cleaned on these jars prior to putting the lid on. I also see lots of air bubbles. Not sure if any of these things had an effect but things to make note of.
Why is the jar on the right covered in applesauce all around the ring? Were the rims of the jars not properly cleaned before applying lids? And does that bottom left jar have a crack in it? The separation isn’t my first concern.
Pitch em. Looks like they’ve gone bad.
Anyone else in your group have the same issue?
Have you opened one? What does it smell like?
Could it be fermenting?
This happened to my applesauce this year too and I’m also not sure why. I’m guessing the apples we used contained more juice than pulp, which then separated. We used a large variety of apples so maybe that contributed to it too?
As long as it sealed properly, it’s fine to eat. I just mix the applesauce with a spoon when I open the jar and it blends together fine.
There is nothing wrong with this. The water has separated out. Stir it before use.
