I picked up a bag of the maple charcoal at my local hardware store. Anyone use it? Anything that this works better for?

We have bought a bag of it and of the Brazilian hardwood mix(don’t remember the exact name).

I recall it burnt fine, not as hot as some others of the other hardwood options, and it wasn’t overall Smokey. Sorry for begin vague, it was a few years ago.

The Brazilian burnt hotter and would probably be better suited for T-Rexing steaks and stuff and the maple for smoking wings and like things.

  2. Get it now … next year’s bag will be 50% higher in price

Why would one want to by BGE coal? No other local more affordable coal?

Nice to see you supporting our brothers up north!!!

It’s fine. My bag had mostly quite small pieces, so a bit disappointing there.

This is actually my favorite charcoal to use overall. Great quality charcoal, lots of nice big chunks.

  7. If you can get a bag that hasn’t been crushed up, this and the Brazilian hardwood are awesome. Don’t really notice much of a difference between charcoals. Some brands are better in general though.

I love it! It’s all I use, and I’ve been using this for about 3 years straight now since it returned to shelves (covid), and was using it before that too.

It’s great with pork and chicken both grilled and smoked. It awesome with grilled chicken and pulled pork. It’s just ok with beef though. You’ll want to toss a hiclory chunk in no matter what you do, but it’s not like it’s trash if you don’t.

It’s wants to cook between 300 and 400. It takes work to get it to cook lower and a long time for it be balanced hotter. Not a big deal unless you want to sear a steak. Low temps take a learning curve as it like to drop too low until it knows it can get to 300, then it gets cranking.

It’s all coal so it’s not like it crazy hard, just nuances to it vs oak & hickory.

I would love to find a bag. I have smoked pork belly and turkey breast with sugar maple chunks and it really adds a nice flavor to the meat.

  10. I find the BGE charcoal imparts too much smoke flavor in grilled stuff, so I’d use it for slow cooks.

  11. I’ve bought a bag of the Brazilian recently. I also buy the black medium chunk bags for grilling. Have you guys notice the quality seems to be lacking in the past year?

  12. I use Marabu Steakhouse, very neutral when it comes to smoke flavor and very long lasting.

I’ve used it. It works great, just had a “cleaner” burn, if that makes sense. Not as much Smokey flavor that you might get from straight charcoal as some other types. But depending on what you’re cooking, you might not want as Smokey of a flavour, in which case, this works perfectly. Lights easy and gets pretty hot.

I picked some of this up yesterday as well, glad these comments are positive!

  15. This is really good and burns hot. I went to a BGE event show and picked up a bag. My local ace and other bbq stores don’t carry it.
