this sub is the reason I even knew about the fabled Izakaya burger.
I bartend in the neighborhood and really like The Izakaya. I’ve eaten at Momotaro, some of the best sushi I’ve had. Expensive but good. But The Izakaya is more my vibe overall. I love the bar staff, looove the hand rolls, thought the ramen was really dissapointing, and finally had the burger tonight.
It totally is one of the best burgers I’ve had. 9/10. The bun isn’t soft and chewy, it’s like a bao that’s been deep-fried or something. It’s awesome and holds the burger together very well. I’d recommend leaving the pick in for the first half to help. It’s tender and rich and greasy, which I love in a burger. The only flaw was I felt it needed more pickley stuff — it’s mostly just rich. There’s some sort of slaw and pickle on it but it’s not enough. Still, delicious.
The satsumaimo fries are really unique and delicious. Super starchy, and half of them are super crunchy and thin, and the other half are thicker-cut and you get a lot of tender potato.
The miso mayo was fuckin beyond. I ended up ordering a second side of it.
Had an Asahi and their Maneki Wanko sake. SUPER tasty sake, had an almost marzipan-esque note. but it wasn’t overly sweet.
I need to take a nap. This is a one-and-done. Don’t order any appetizers or sides, unless you’re splitting a burger with someone. It’s HEAVY. But that’s what a good burger is.
