They may not look amazing and some bits got darker due to my awkward layering and spreading g of the Tomato paste… but I can say these taste awesome and are a nice cheap budget food with the method based on my teen years methods. Its quite filling aswell which helps and the pita is often the simplest least ingredient based bread purchasable allowing it to be healthier with cheaper costing.
Ingredients:
Cheese
4 small wholemeal pita pockets
Tomato paste
Mixed herbs
Salt
Pepper
Method:
Toast pita lightly on one side in the grill.
Remove and flip to add tomato paste evenly on the untoasted side.
Add herbs then cheese to cover.
Return to grill and melt cheese to preference.
Remove and season with salt and pepper.
Ready to eat.
Costings:
I managed to get the pita for a discounted rate so 84 cents or so for the 4. I used 5 cheese slices so that was $1.65 and I used probably 40 cents worth or perhaps less of Tomato paste.
So less than $3 for the plate of 4 and if using 1kg cheese block rather than slices it would likely be under $2.50 for the plate of 4.
Ingredients at full price:
$1.40 – Tomato paste 500grams (a budget staple)
$2.60 – 8 small wholemeal pita (larger ones can be purchased and some places are cheaper also)
$7.90 – 24 cheese slices or $9.30 1kg cheese (the best option is the cheap 1kg, I just sometimes buy the slices if I want cheap energising food whilst out)
Herbs, salt and pepper dependant on place.
