  1. The lime green looks great with rust planters.
Yes, hot this week and no rain. I already told you of the terrible week it’s been and I mulched everything yesterday quite heavily. I used anything I had because I have 2 large gardens, well, until frost. Tomorrow I will take a count to see what was lost and if I can replant with same.
I have many new rows that we started last year and our neighbor has a huge pile of leaves and pine needles. As I was digging in the new beds I ran into clumps of needles and they don’t hold a lot of water. They will shade the soil well though and read they are only acidic in the green stage. I know marsh hay can kill plants by smothering if too thick. I used grass clippings and straw. We had oat straw last year and we did have oat seeds start to sprout but they are easy to pull and let lay for mulch.
Having a time watering, but the mulch is helping. I did see a tomato flower today on a survivor of the frost.
I got some 9 gauge wire today and believe it will make sufficient hoops for the various cloths over rows. Tomorrow we will make the man happy and plant on Memorial Day after I reluctantly take count of all that was lost.
Your garden is so cute and easy to maintain with irrigation. Hope WI and Northern IL get some rain Soon! Our area is a dry prairie and sandy soil. We get at least 5* degrees hotter than forecast and if we are already hitting 90s and they say hotter next week—Jeesh! Shade fabric time.

  2. This cracks me up, we rake and burn our pine straw every year! I’m in Northern California. Maybe I should start using it in my garden😆

  3. Your garden is so beautiful!! I love cilantro specially when I make chimichurri (yummy yummy 😂). You could collect the cilantro’s seeds and use it (coriander) as spice.

  4. I’m in Georgia and use the long needle pine straw in my vegetable beds every year. I have never had a problem with mice nesting in it. You did good

  5. I love my drip irrigation in my raised beds. I have (25) 3×4 beds, I had to split them in 2 groups so they all got ample water. I have them run early morning.

  6. I’ve seen some other gardeners use the bedding ppl use for chickens and pets as mulch. They sell it at Tractor Supply. I haven’t put mulch on my garden yet, but was thinking of using the bedding this year.

  7. The regular straw should be aged a year before you use it and it will be even easier than the pine straw to place on the garden. I get at least 3 or 4 bales a year and allow it to sit and age in the weather and then it's perfect to use in my veggies.

  8. Mulching is a huge dilemma. Everything has good and bad about it. This year I’m trying grass/clover clippings. I’m hoping I don’t get more seeds in my veg beds.

  9. I wasn’t familiar with pine mulch, but I really like the look. Your gardens are growing so beautiful. If they were mine, I’d never be anywhere else. Thank you for sharing.

  10. I use pine straw a lot. I love how light weight it is. It does flatten out soon after you put it down. I think it will work perfectly for you.

  11. I like using pine straw mulch. It keeps the rain from splashing soil on my plants. It's hard to find up North. I'm glad you found a source.

  12. I use grass clippings over vegetable beds. We mow every week in May and June right around the time I start putting vegetable seedlings into the ground. Perfect timing. In summer we mow once a month, just enough to top off. Glass clipping does get brown and messy with wind, but we have too much to compost so this is a good way to use it up plus free to mulch.

  13. The nasturtiums are already glorious 😲 I'm going to HAVE to try them in my shaded areas! Love your videos!! 👍😉

  14. I like your idea of using the pine straw mulch. Will have to keep an eye out for it. Your garden looks lush and beautiful.
I mulch with a product called soil pep most years.

  15. We always used grass clippings because we didn’t treat our lawn with anything and didn’t have to worry about chemicals

  16. I don't know if you are familiar with leaf mulch …. in saying that ….. I think that you missed a perfect opportunity to enrich your soil by not using it …. I am not trying to be a smart mouth here just that that is the only mulch that I will use … regardless of if it is vegetables or plants ….. !!!
