I was a big fan of Butter Lane before they moved to Jersey, they had delicious cupcakes that were a lot like DC’s famous Baked and Wired in terms of taste and style. Are there other bakeries that make amazing cupcakes like that in Manhattan or Brooklyn? A lot of the ones I’ve tried in North Brooklyn have been dry and disappointing, even from the supposedly good places. I’m looking for cupcakes that have moist cake and a good variety of flavors.

It’s been too long, but I’ve always preferred the cupcakes from Sugar Sweet Sunshine over Magnolia, which I think is way too sweet.

North Brooklyn is not a great cupcake zone. I would check out Ovenly, but I think I’ve gotten from there and not remembered how they are? Not a great sign.

Google Maps is also flagging Brooklyn Cupcake on Grand and Union, but I’ve never been. Would love to know if they’re good or not!

I think you may have to do a cupcake crawl and see what you like the best. I mean, it’s tough work, but someone has to do it. Try Two Little Red Hens (edit: it’s closed; try its successor Ladybird in Brooklyn), Molly’s, Sugar Sweet Sunshine, and City Cakes for a start.

You can check out Molly’s in the West Village, they are probably the most famous/popular cupcake spot in the city. Personally I don’t like them that much because I find them to be too sugary and have too much going on.

My old favorite was Georgetown cupcakes in Soho, their cupcakes were more on the nice and simple side. Unfortunately they closed during the pandemic.

I’m not sure if they’re anything like Butter Lane but my favorite cupcakes are Sprinkles. Buttercream frostings, not that dreadful sugar icing, and the cake is always yummy!

I’m so bummed about their close/ move too!

Some of my other faves are Two Little Red Hens (which still hasn’t reopened) and Sprinkles (good variety of flavors), but they’re not the same.

Agree on Mollys and also Huascar & Co (weird location but def def worth the trek for their crème brûlée cupcake especially)
