I haven’t used my egg in a while and I recently opened it to find a ton of what looks like mold!
Unsure what to do. I fired it back up to burn it off and that didn’t seem to work. I scraped it off but wanted to know if this has ever happened to anyone before and what I need to do to make it safe to cook in

Clean burn good as new.
Normal. Pack in some coal and do a high temp burn of everything, grates included.
Yeah put a good amount of charcoal in and leave the top and bottom vent wide open. Get it hot like 600+ dome temp. I would do this with no pate setter and no grill. Be careful cause it can get incredibly hot if you forget about it.
If you keep the bottom vent slightly open, and use a little foil to elevate the ceramic cap on the chimney, you will avoid this in the future. I’ve not had mold in several years, since I started doing this.
leave it open after using just spray with some bleach diluted in water ie 3T per gallon then fire it up in an 1/2 hour it will get rid of the mold i did the same thing by leaving my lid close when the humidity was high
It happens to mine as well at times in the Alabama humidity. i don’t do a 600-700 degree burn like some people do, but i will run it at 450 for 3-5 hours and everything i have read said that will kill it just fine. If you do your research you’ll see that technically anything above 150-160 will kill it if you sustain it for a few hours.
Personally I don’t like to do super burns, as I cracked a fire ring letting mine run 600-700 for a while on a ‘burnout’
When doing a clean burn, avoid opening up the cover. If you need to do it then do it very slowly to “burp” the egg. Look for videos online for those that burnt the hair off their arms from doing this quickly.
And please take a load off and relax I front of that grill a little sooner next time…unless of course you were relaxing somewhere else…lol…I start to get the shakes if I don’t fire mine up once every two weeks…
I love how excited this sub gets when lever this question is asked.
Vents open full basket BURN BABY BURN!!
Then replace gasket.
If there’s not a zombie movie that ends with someone disposing of zombies in a green egg then we’ve failed.

This isn’t NSFW?
Burn it!
Kill it with fire.
It’s not salvageable. Please DM me so I can properly dispose of it for you. 🤣
