I have been given a large green egg. I have looked at them for years but between the Weber Kettle and a Recteq I could justify spending the money. However a co-worker had one he was no longer using and gifted it to me. I am pumped. What are some must haves? It’s an older model with the daisy wheel on top so would something like a smokeware cap be a justified upgrade?

Nice, real nice. Did it come with any accessories if it doesn’t have a basket or can you might want one of those instead of the grate that comes with the egg? Also, an instant read thermometer is a must.

  2. Plate setter/ conveggtor is a must so you can cook indirectly, if that wasn’t included.

Rad table. I like the smokeware cap but I’ve never used anything else. And as other have said get the conveggtor if you don’t already have it. Also, just because your coming off a Webber I feel like I should mention it JUST incase, but make sure you never ever ever use lighter fluid in the egg and also make sure you get good lump charcoal, not briquettes. Enjoy!

Also no need for coal chimney. Once you overshoot your desired temp it is hard to cool down. Always better to start lower and rise up. Lots of info on vent placement in this sub if you do a search.

I like my daisy wheel top. I can make super fine adjustments with it. I’ve never used the newer cap so can’t say whether or not it’s better than the daisy wheel.
