I’m not sure what the cutoff for “old” is, the cookbook itself is from 2000, but the recipes feel much older.

I feel like any given recipe in this cookbook is either 1) the best food you have ever tasted or 2) the worst piece of shoe leather pulled out of a pan, and there is no in-between.

Doves is the only acceptable meat in this list

Appalachian cookbooks also have recipes like this.

I have an old.cookbook with a recipe for prairie chicken!

  6. So I had raccoon once as a child, and I am pretty sure this is delicious. 3 raccoons is kinda wild, but maybe they aren’t as meaty as they look.

I’m feeling the muskrat with sweet cream gravy….looks like a muskrat love!

  8. Oh my GOD! I am adding this to my collection of unlikely recipies along with crow, squirrel, badger, fox and I am afraid Puffin

Going to save this post… I’ve got a dozen squirrels in the freezer and that gumbo looks like it would be great.

My grandfather, who grew up in Vermont, said they ate raccoon, squirrel, muskrat and possum. I don’t recall him ever saying anything about dove. This was during the Great Depression. People did what they had to do to survive. He had the biggest heart, and my parents and I made sure he was well fed until he passed.

  11. Okay, but Grey “Sparky” Sparkman is just a fantastic name.

I can confirm raccoon, squirrel, and muskrat are all delicious. Same with moose, deer, bear, cougar, and muskox.

I bet country raccoons taste good but I wouldn’t want a city raccoon that lives off of garbage

Let’s hope it doesn’t come to this.

I am so getting this book for my brother-in-law.

Shoot, I’d try raccoon. These recipes aren’t too shocking, after you get over the whole “How do I process a squirrel/raccoon/possum correctly”

Did you know that the “Good Cook” series from Time/Life had a “Game” book that was exclusive to the UK? I found one in a secondhand store and my mind was blown.

gourmet magazine in 1950 had recipes for squirrel, raccoon and possum. strange how we’ve become disconnected to that so completely.

I bought a cookbook for my Mom in Kentucky in the early 90s that had a road kill stew in there. 12 year old me was very grossed out
