It’s time for us to get GROWING in our new Vegetable Garden!
We filled our VEGEGA raised garden beds with a mixture of Terra Preta, compost, sheep & horse manure and we planted up some plug plants and seeds.
To start with we planted two different types of Tomato’s, Beetroot, Ruccula, Carrots and red and brown Onions. We also planted our Avocado tree into the ground. Its been in a pot for the last 3 years and was desperate to get its roots into the ground.
Our greenhouse was looking a bit tatty so it got a new cover and Gina worked her magic weeding and tilling it all ready for some planting.
This week we also sow all of the grass seeds and sort out some irrigation so that we can grow a lush lawn for us to lay on in the spring and summer months.

Just a couple of ideas for you….if your soil isn’t the best, for future tree plantings, a good idea is to dig a hole about 1 metre across and about 1/2 metre or so deep. Fill it with all the good stuff eg manure, compost etc and your newly planted tree will power ahead. If you want to grow potatoes or sweet potatoes, use blocks or similar or a metal garbage can to make a raised bed, so that when it’s time to harvest you just dismantle the bed or upend the can. Don’t use tyres for any edible plantings because toxins leech out of tyres into your food crops. Wonderful stacked for flowers but never food plants.

You need to pick up a grommet kit for your sun shade. Add some grommets and it will stay better secured to the frame and not fray so much.

Hi Ken and Gina. Great video. You asked about avocados. When I was a young pup, I lived in the "Avocado Capital of the World" in southern California. First thing to know is that avocado trees do not have a tap root per say. Instead, they have many roots that spread out close to the surface of the ground to capture what little rainfall there could be on a dry climate. When you pulled the clay pot, you could see the root structure. Just be sensitive to future root directions and depth. You may want to also look into the type of avocado to determine if it is an A or B tree. Avocados will flower with the female flowers in the morning, with the flowers opening as male the following day (Type A). Type B is the opposite. In essence, fruiting will depend on the temperature tolerance, and if your tree came from a nursery with a climate similar to yours. These trees are self pollinating, IF the weather is just right. When the avocado craze was at its peak in California, people were planting avocados on hillsides far too steep for good cultivation, let alone harvesting. At one of the industry conferences, it was a suggested that monkeys be used to climb the trees and pick the avocados (fortunately that suggestion didn't last more than a few months.) We also left the leaves on the ground, as raking them up exposed the roots to too much temperature and water variation. Finally, and this was a local issue, we carried a gun with us because the rattlesnakes loved to live in the leaves. So with that said, good luck with your tree, and hopefully the fruit. BTW, I too love the sound of the impact sprinklers. It brings back many memories.

Filling the beds with branches and wood isn't to save money , it's a planting technique called Hugul kultur and it's really good at creating a continuous level of feed for your plants as the wood and twigs break down.
Cucumbers and tomatoes etc thrive using this system … some "food" for future thoughts… cheers

I think you’re planting too close, look up distancing, each veg will be different..

Those planters are going to keep settling because you didn’t compact as you filled. Use a sledge hammer with handle upside down to poke down as deep as you can then use sledge head to pack the top. Anything you plant before will settle 150-300 mm.Good luck Roy.

i had several raised bed gardens maintained by honor farm inmates , root crops and salsa veggies were by far the favorites. good luck
miristeming plants do not produce tap roots. it a method of making a producing tree from a producing limb of a mature plant or tree. your avocado was more than likely grown this way. grown from a seed the tree would have a tap root. my2cents ps I have done many figs using the miristem process and it works well
Looks great. I believe those raised beds would be called veg, as in vegetables, and gah. So, veggie gah.
Did you rake the grass seed in so more germinates & less gets eaten by birds?
