April is here! It’s been a super wet year in Southern California, but we know that the sunshine is just about here.
In April, there are some 60+ veggies, herbs & flowers that I recommend growing, but let’s highlight some favorites. As the weather warms up, we’ll filter out the last of the cool-season crops and keep adding in warm-season varieties.
The best way to know what to plant each month? Get yourself a calendar! https://sandiegoseedcompany.com/product/tools-and-merchandise/urban-farming-planting-calendar/

For gardeners in zones 9 and 10, April is a great month to start tomatoes, peppers (use a heating mat if it’s still cold), eggplant, and basil. You can also direct sow root crops, greens, potatoes, cucumbers, beans, squash, melons, and flowers.
I start my tomatoes a little bit early because I have limitations on space. If you haven’t started yours yet, that’s totally okay! You can start them all the way through September so there is no rush.
If nighttime temps are chilly, you can use row cover for your direct sown plants. Warmer soil temperatures are good for germination, so we want to be aware of what conditions we are putting our plants in.
Spring is a great time to add lots of color to your garden by planting flowers! I recommend starting quite a few varieties in the fall so they can grow all winter and give beautiful blooms in the spring. If you want spring flowers, that’s the way to go.
If you missed that window, you still have tons of options. Zinnia, scabiosa, and flax are all great options that are really easy to grow.
Chances are, most of your cool season crops are just about done at this point. They’ve likely gone to flower, and whatever is left isn’t ideal for flavor & texture. If you have chickens or a compost pile, you just keep those nutrients in your system!
As you pull those out, you have room for your warm-season crops. Some of the first to go in will probably be tomatoes. You can plant your seedlings pretty deep. Just make sure they don’t get rootbound!

Too late to start seeds of tomatoes etc. in southern 9-10 (Gulf states), at least this year. Also too late to direct sow beets, carrots, greens. It's already hot here!
Expanded my garden space this year! Super exicted to get these plants in the ground, this year I hope me and my family will be eatin' good!
Striving to be more successful with my garden. Thank you!
Hi Brijette!
Spain calling! I left you a message of gratitude yesterday on your fb messenger 🙏🏼 I'm so happy and grateful I got your calender 😊
Super service! Muchisimas gracias 🙏🏼 To you and Jonathan 🙌🏼
It's already 90+ here daily. My tomato plants are putting out fruit. Some are already turning. I have to change over to summer stuff. Cowpeas, lots and lots, and okra. Squashes are fruiting, enjoyed first harvest already.
In zone 9 but it's so cold still!! I usually just plant seed right outside but its been in the 30s at night still!!!??
I love your videos so much. We bought land two years ago but now it has been the time that I have found to dedicate to our future veggie patch. I have never grown anything in my life apart from sunflowers and potatoes and this videos are so helpful. Because of you, I have been able to wrap my head around growing what and how. Now I have two trays of veggies! Super useful!!!
We live in Portugal which it's also zone 9-10!
We’re still about 10° cooler this year than last year So much cold air coming off the snow pack I think. Our nights are still low 40° Doesn’t it need to be in the 50° overnight for tomatoes?
When you do not have snow winter or fall it is okay to plant it but severe snow it will kill your plants.
It is sunny I San Diego try to plant bitter melon and Moringa. Health wise they are good vegetables.
Thanks great seeds. First time planting flowers. Garden looks amazing.
Watching here sending full support and I will always support you idol👍😊😘😍
