I’ve had this book for 30ish years and the birthday cake I made for myself since I was about 8 till well into adulthood. Later I switched to a more elaborate base chocolate cake but as a kid it was good enough.

For the cake:

* 25cl milk
* 1tbsp lemon juice
* 100g softened butter
* 250g sugar
* 2 eggs
* 225g flour
* 50 pure cocoa powder
* 1 tsp baking soda

1. preheat oven at 180°C
2. mix milk and lemon juice
3. sift together the flour,baking soda and cocoa powder
4. cream the sugar and butter together, add the eggs one by one then alternate adding to it one half of the wet ingredients and one half of the dry ones until all combined.
5. bake for 1h
6. after letting it cool, cut it in the desired shape. Frost it, decorate it.

For the almond fondant decorations :

* 2tbsp beaten eggs
* 100g almond powder
* 100g powdered sugar
* 1/4 tsp food dye

mix everything but the dye together until you get a firm dough. Divide it and add the dye to one part. Shape them however you wish.
