A 91-year-old former Disneyland chef who spent six decades serving guests says a benefits error has effectively declared him dead \u2014 cutting off his medical insurance and retirement funds while his wife receives payments intended for a widow.<\/p>\n

Chef Oscar Martinez, Disneyland Resort\u2019s longest-tenured cast member when he retired in 2017, said in a public Facebook post this week that Disney Benefits, Disneyland, Fidelity Investments, and Cigna mistakenly recorded him as deceased on July 31, 2026. Martinez says the error remains unresolved, leaving him without medical coverage he relies on for medications and hydration.<\/p>\n

His wife, June Martinez, says Fidelity has also been sending her \u201cwidow benefits paychecks\u201d while her husband is alive.<\/p>\n

Martinez described weeks of calls and emails as his family tried to correct the record. According to his statement, his spouse even offered to bring him to Disneyland Park in Anaheim, California, so he could physically prove that he was alive.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy spouse even mentioned that if she needs to take me to the park in person to acknowledge that I am alive, she will,\u201d Martinez wrote, adding that the family was told doing so was not necessary.<\/p>\n

Martinez said he has received neither his retirement funds nor medical insurance since the error. He said no explanation had been provided for what happened to his accounts.<\/p>\n

June Martinez said Fidelity began sending her widow-benefit checks. She also shared images reported to show an Orange County vital-records search indicating Martinez was alive and a condolence letter from Disney Benefits.<\/p>\n

As of publication, Inside the Magic has not independently confirmed which organization originated the erroneous death designation or why it has not been corrected.<\/p>\n

Martinez began working at Disneyland on December 29, 1956, roughly a year after the Anaheim park opened, and retired on September 27, 2017.<\/p>\n

Inside the Magic covered Martinez\u2019s retirement after 60 years at Disneyland, when he was recognized as the resort\u2019s longest-tenured employee. He started as a busboy at the Fantasy 1 restaurant before moving through food-service roles and becoming a fixture at Carnation Caf\u00e9.<\/p>\n

Martinez moved to Carnation Caf\u00e9 on Main Street, U.S.A., in 1967. He became closely associated with the restaurant, his breakfast potatoes, and \u201cOscar\u2019s Choice,\u201d while later serving as an ambassador who greeted diners.<\/p>\n

Disneyland Resort President Michael Colglazier said at Martinez\u2019s retirement that he had been \u201can icon to our guests and an inspiration to our cast.\u201d ABC7 Los Angeles also documented his retirement and 60-year Disneyland career in 2017.<\/p>\n

Disney still describes Carnation Caf\u00e9 as a Main Street, U.S.A. institution serving classic American comfort food.<\/p>\n

That history makes the current dispute particularly jarring. According to the Martinez family, a death status triggered consequences across retirement and health benefits while the supposed deceased person continued trying to get the error corrected.<\/p>\n

Fidelity\u2019s own guidance explains that beneficiaries can receive retirement-account assets after an account holder dies and that the treatment of a 401(k) after death depends partly on marital status, beneficiary designations, and plan rules. That does not establish what happened inside Martinez\u2019s accounts, but it shows why a death designation can carry serious financial consequences.<\/p>\n

For Martinez, the medical side is more immediate. He specifically said his health insurance was taken away and tied that loss to access to medications and hydration.<\/p>\n

No public evidence reviewed by Inside the Magic establishes that Disney, Fidelity, or Cigna intentionally denied Martinez benefits knowing he was alive. Based on Martinez\u2019s account, this appears to be an unresolved administrative error \u2014 but one with real consequences.<\/p>\n

Martinez ended his statement with pointed Disney-specific irony. If the company considers him dead, he wrote, it should at least install the Main Street window he says was promised to him.<\/p>\n

\u201cDisney, please at least place the Main Street window that was promised to me,\u201d Martinez wrote. \u201cDisney makes things right!\u201d<\/p>\n

Main Street, U.S.A. windows are a longstanding form of recognition for people whose work helped shape Disney\u2019s parks. Inside the Magic previously reported on a fan petition calling for Martinez to receive a window after his retirement and has covered personalized Main Street windows honoring longtime Disney figures including Imagineer Tony Baxter.<\/p>\n

More recently, Disney continued the tradition with a Disneyland Main Street window for former CEO Bob Iger. For Martinez, the window is now part of a public appeal involving his benefits and health coverage.<\/p>\n

Martinez says he is not retreating from public view. \u201cI am 91 years old, alive, and thriving,\u201d he wrote, adding that guests might even see him in the park this weekend.<\/p>\n

What remains unknown is how the incorrect death designation entered the benefits system, which entity is responsible for correcting it, whether Martinez\u2019s medical coverage and retirement payments will be restored retroactively, and when the family will receive an explanation.<\/p>\n
