Kansas Ave.                                                                                            Eric Adler                                                                            The Kansas City Star                                                                                        <\/p>\n<p>Celebrity British chef Gordon Ramsay and his hit television show \u201cKitchen Nightmares\u201d \u2014 which had been filming earlier this week at Big Creek Cafe in Pleasant Hill \u2014 was headed to Topeka\u2019s NOTO Arts &amp; Entertainment block, north across the Kansas River, and to a tiny corner restaurant, 844 N. Facebook\/Gordon Ramsay                                                                                        <\/p>\n<p>But through a bit of TV fame, and Ramsay\u2019s signature yelling, ranting, exasperation and, in the end, brotherly wisdom, perhaps its restaurant dreams can come true.<\/p>\n<p>Gordon Ramsay TV descends on NOTO<\/p>\n<p>By early Thursday morning, under heavy gray skies, and in spattering rain, the production crew had already arrived and set up in a public parking lot east of North Kansas Avenue. Eric Adler                                                                            The Kansas City Star                                                                                        <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s either biscuits, gravy and eggs and coffee, or three eggs, hash browns with gravy, wheat toast and coffee. On rarer occasions: ham and cheese omelet, or maybe French toast.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Best breakfast place in Topeka\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Nightmare? Hardly, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFood is real good. Best breakfast place in Topeka, I think. It\u2019s kind of laid back. Never no trouble,\u201d he said. \u201cI go to Cook\u2019s (American Grill). I go to IHOP. I went to all them places, but I still drive here. It\u2019s about 15, 20 minutes from my house. It\u2019s been good to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pittman said he\u2019s known the last three owners well, including the latest, Jacque Duchesneau, who worked alongside Bradley Jennings when he opened the place in 2006. Duchesneau took over and reopened in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>The caf\u00e9 sits in a sturdy brick building from the early 20th century. In the 1930s, it was the Kaw Valley State Bank. Before that, in the 1900s, it was reportedly a bakery. Eric Adler                                                                            The Kansas City Star                                                                                        <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean, they keep it pretty clean,\u201d Pittman said, as far as he can see. \u201cI\u2019ve never been in the back of the kitchen though.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maybe the \u201cnightmare\u201d lies there. Or in the business\u2019s logistics, or staff. The place back in 2013 received high praise in Saveur magazine for its pies, 20 different varieties.<\/p>\n<p>Pittman: He likes the small-town, homespun treatment he gets from the staff, the owners. He likes the customers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout the same people come in all the time,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>American greasy spoon<\/p>\n<p>Wayne Leifried, 60, pulled up in his pick-up, allows that, as much as he loves the place, sure, maybe it could use a facelift. But he also feels that whatever it\u2019s perceived flaws, those are also its charm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHave you heard the term \u2018greasy spoon?\u2019\u201d Leifried said. \u201cOK. That\u2019s a greasy spoon. That\u2019s a greasy American spoon that\u2019s been around for years. And guess what? There\u2019s nothing wrong with it. It\u2019s absolutely wonderful.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheir biscuits in the morning \u2014 I\u2019m actually a little late \u2014 but if you get here at 6:30, they are pillowy soft. They are the best. They have an outside contractor producing their pies. They\u2019re famous for the pies. Eric Adler                                                                            The Kansas City Star                                                                                        <\/p>\n<p>Because he\u2019s 60 and needs to watch his weight and health, Leifried said he tries not to come too often. \u201cI try to limit it to once a week,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever nightmare the program will reveal, in need of Ramsay\u2019s correction, he sees the place as \u201ca gem,\u201d that works because it\u2019s out of time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe waitresses,\u201d Leifried began.\u201d I had a German girlfriend, and I brought her here. And Germans are pretty snooty. But she said when you come to Bradley\u2019s, you get what\u2019s on TV. That\u2019s the movies right there: the old ladies pouring your coffee and thanking and giving you a \u2018hon\u2019 and all of this stuff. Wasn\u2019t going to happen today. To his eye, the place has always been great, decorated in what he calls \u201ca \u201860s, \u201870s style.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s more publicity for NOTO,\u201d as an emerging district, Wyre said.<\/p>\n<p>He recounted town history \u2014 how the old Kansas Avenue Bridge, or Melan Bridge, used to connect South Topeka to North Topeka along Kansas Avenue until, in July 1965, part of the roadway collapsed and what remained of the bridge was later demolished.<\/p>\n<p>A new bridge was built to the east. Shops now line the NOTO district. Christmas-style lights are strung across the street. Eric Adler                                                                            The Kansas City Star                                                                                        <\/p>\n<p>Moorea Bassett, 26, rushed down to the area on Thursday morning in hopes of grabbing an autograph from Ramsay for her husband, Rex, who is a major fan, having made Ramsay\u2019s beef Wellington for Christmas a couple of years ago. Ramsay did not appear to be about.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI used to come here all the time with my grandma, we\u2019d eat breakfast here and enjoy breakfast together,\u201d she said. She said she was \u201csuper surprised\u201d that Bradley\u2019s had been chosen as a \u2018nightmare\u2019 restaurant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI enjoy it here.
