The newly opened North London restaurant, the 11th in the Taro group, serves up an outstanding menu of Japanese favourites and location-exclusive creations, with every dish showcasing meticulous skill and extraordinary attention to freshness and flavour. This may just be one of our favourite restaurant discoveries of the year – and one that has already earned its place on our return list.

Located on Holloway Road, moments from the Emirates Stadium and Nag’s Head Market, the 62-cover restaurant takes inspiration from the Japanese concept of Taishu Shokudo, an everyday dining room designed to welcome everyone. It brings together the much-loved dishes that have made Taro a London favourite, from handmade sushi and sashimi to comforting bowls of ramen and udon, alongside an impressively extensive selection of bento, rice dishes, Japanese small plates, and more.

Despite the sheer breadth of the menu, the quality and freshness never waver, with even the perfectly crisp, lightly coated tempura fried in oil so immaculate that it leaves no trace of heaviness or residue on the plate. The immaculate presentation of each element, particularly the stunning Chef’s Special Rolls, elevates the entire menu far beyond what its remarkably reasonable prices might suggest. And with its generous portion sizes, attacking the menu with a sharing-plate mentality might be the best way to explore as much of it as possible in one sitting.

The meal can easily be made up of small plates alone, the menu featuring highlights such as grilled Shrimp Sumai packed with juicy shrimp and vegetables, Ika Squid Tempura served with tentsuyu dipping sauce, and, best of all, the Tako Yaki, serving up delicious deep-fried octopus balls topped with tonkatsu sauce and mayonnaise. The extensive selection also includes gyoza, karaage, tempura, and more. The rice dishes, particularly the signature Chicken Teriyaki Don, have been consistent fan-favourites, alongside the Chicken Katsu Udon and Tonkotsu Ramen Bowls particularly as the temperature begins to drop.

Most bento boxes come with rice and miso soup for a full Japanese feast in one beautifully arranged box. The Taro Special Bento is particularly impressive, bringing together Tori Karaage, Yakitori, Inari sushi, prawn tempura, salmon sashimi, salmon and prawn sushi, edamame, and beansprouts, while the Holloway-exclusive Arsenal Special Bento is the real standout, serving up crispy prawn and vegetable tempura, fresh salmon, tuna and yellowtail sashimi, assorted nigiri, an inside-out roll topped with tobiko, seasoned beansprouts, and goma wakame seaweed salad. It is an enormous amount of food for the price, with the freshness of the seafood and the variety of textures making the bento boxes one of the strongest sections of the menu.

The extensive sushi selection spans temaki, ura maki, maki, speciality rolls, and sashimi. The Chef’s Special Rolls provide the real wow factor, with the Holloway-exclusive Arsenal Special Roll combining prawn tempura, cream cheese, and avocado with tuna and Taro’s house dressing, while the signature Taro Roll pairs tuna and avocado with marinated spicy salmon, teriyaki sauce, mayo, and tobiko.

With such an outstandingly executed menu, one would expect the drinks selection to follow suit – and Taro does not disappoint. The cocktail list includes the Taro Cocktail, combining sochu, plum wine, and mango, alongside an excellent take on the Spiced Margarita, made with silver tequila infused with jalapeño, agave syrup, and lime.

Taro has been serving authentic Japanese food in London since Mr Taro opened its first Brewer Street restaurant in 1999, building a loyal following through its approachable food, warm hospitality, and evident commitment to quality. The Holloway opening marks its 11th restaurant, continuing the brand’s expansion into neighbourhoods with strong local communities.

Simply, this is a restaurant that gets Japanese food very, very right. Everything about Taro’s offering is fresh, flavourful, and flawlessly executed – and one visit is nowhere near enough to discover everything it has to showcase. Japanese food fanatic, curious explorer, or local in search of your next go-to, there is something here to keep you coming back. Taro Holloway is a truly exceptional new opening, and one we cannot recommend highly enough.

Taro Holloway is now open at 361 Holloway Road, London, N7 0RN.
