Alberta Health Services (AHS) is investigating a gastrointestinal illness outbreak associated with a sushi restaurant in southeast Calgary.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Officials say there are four confirmed cases and two probable cases associated with the outbreak, with all cases reporting eating food at Kinjo Sushi & Grill in Mahogany on or around Sept. 18.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“The pathogen associated with the outbreak has been identified as Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC),” said AHS. “Individuals who consumed food or beverages at the facility on or around Sept. 18 and 19 may have been exposed to STEC.”\u00a0<\/p>\n
Health officials are working to identify the source of the infection. A public health inspection was conducted on Monday, with no critical violations found at the facility.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Anyone who had food or drinks at the Mahogany restaurant on or around Sept. 18 and 19 may have been exposed to STEC.\u00a0<\/p>\n
If you have symptoms, AHS said to call 811 or your primary care provider for medical assessment.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The restaurant will remain open while the investigation continues.\u00a0<\/p>\n
What is STEC?\u00a0<\/p>\n
STEC is a type of bacteria that can spread when someone comes into contact with food or water contaminated by fecal matter. Person-to-person transmission may also occur when someone does not wash their hands after using the washroom.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea with stomach cramps. Dehydration caused by diarrhea is the most common complication. AHS said STEC generally goes away without treatment.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
