{"id":18093,"date":"2026-09-18T13:59:28","date_gmt":"2026-09-18T13:59:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.diningandcooking.com\/us\/18093\/"},"modified":"2026-09-18T13:59:28","modified_gmt":"2026-09-18T13:59:28","slug":"yupik-food-ex-typhoon-halong-evacuees-gather-for-food-and-family","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.diningandcooking.com\/us\/18093\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Yupik food\u2019: Ex-Typhoon Halong evacuees gather for food and family"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text | article-text\">ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) &#8211; The Alaska Native Heritage Center hosted a community gathering for western Alaska residents who relocated to Anchorage after Ex-Typhoon Halong. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Bonnie Kashatok from Kipnuk said the gathering helped her reconnect to her roots. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cI came to have some Yupik food,\u201d Kashatok said. \u201cI also came to be around Yupik people that I\u2019m like familiar with, like with the cultures and the native language.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Kashatok said the gathering felt more impactful after her family in Kipnuk relocated to Anchorage after Ex-Typhoon Halong. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cThey were floating and their house rooms and they had to go to the school,\u201d Kashatok said. \u201cWe\u2019re trying to get used to eating out of our village, like with different kinds of food.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">This gathering aimed to bring a little bit of home to those who attended <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Cooks in the kitchen made fry bread, fish heads, potatoes and \u201cNative ice cream.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">To those who have never tried these dishes, Kashatok said, \u201cIt\u2019s very fulfilling. It\u2019ll keep you warm for the cold conditions, especially in the winter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">She said, \u201cI hope that you guys learn a lot from us.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Organizers said the food provided were all donations and came from across the state.
