Wisconsin residents have “shopped the Pig” since the late 1940s.<\/p>\n

Founded in 1916 in Tennessee, Piggly Wiggly has a particularly strong presence in Wisconsin with more than 85 grocery stores in the state, second only to Alabama.<\/p>\n

With nearly 20 grocery stores carrying the Piggly Wiggly name among Fond du Lac, Manitowoc, Sheboygan and Winnebago counties, customers may presume all the stores have the same owner.<\/p>\n

But here’s something customers may not know: The company’s franchise structure allowed a pair of individual store owners in southeast Wisconsin to develop their own operations under the Piggly Wiggly brand.<\/p>\n

While most Milwaukee-area stores are part of the larger Piggly Wiggly Midwest banner, the employee-owned Fox Bros. Piggly Wiggly operates 11 stores in the wider southeast Wisconsin region.<\/p>\n

Which stores are which? Here’s what to know about grocery stores from around Fond du Lac, Oshkosh, Manitowoc and Sheboygan.<\/p>\n

Only one area store is owned by Fox Bros., and the rest are Piggly Wiggly Midwest grocery stores. Here’s a list:<\/p>\n

What to know about Piggly Wiggly Midwest’s start<\/p>\n

In 1949, Sheboygan-based Schultz Brothers Company acquired the rights to use the Piggly Wiggly name in southeast Wisconsin and soon expanded the brand’s regional presence. After a series of ownership and name changes, the company went private and rebranded as Piggly Wiggly Midwest in the late 2000s.<\/p>\n

Since 2009, Piggly Wiggly Midwest has operated as an affiliate Kenosha-based wholesaler C&S Wholesale Grocers. Most stores are run by individual franchisees, and a few directly by C&S Wholesale Grocers.<\/p>\n

There are currently 76 Piggly Wiggly locations in Wisconsin, not including the Fox Bros. stores.<\/p>\n

Piggly Wiggly is credited as a pioneer in self-service grocery shopping. When it was founded in 1916, most stores had attendants pick out groceries for customers.<\/p>\n

Fox Bros. Piggly Wiggly started in Hartland<\/p>\n

In 1988, brothers Pat and Bob Fox purchased their first Piggly Wiggly store in Hartland. They bought up more locations starting in the late 1990s, and later developed their own line of bratwurst and summer sausages.<\/p>\n

In 2017, the Foxes sold the company to their employees, adopting an employee stock ownership plan. The brothers formally retired from the company in 2020.<\/p>\n

Fox Bros. currently operates 11 stores, all in southeast Wisconsin. They are as follows:<\/p>\n

In November, the company entered talks to open a new store in South Milwaukee’s former Pick ‘n Save building at 2901 S. Chicago Ave.<\/p>\n

How Pig Points work at Piggly Wiggly stores<\/p>\n

Shoppers can earn Piggly Wiggly’s “Pig Points” at all Piggly Wiggly Midwest and Fox Bros. stores. The rewards program allows customers to use the points for discounts and more.<\/p>\n
