(WBRC) – Carver Jones Market officially opened its new grocery store in Titusville on Wednesday morning, ending a nearly three-year stretch without a full-service grocery store in the neighborhood.<\/p>\n
The store is located in the former Save-A-Lot on Dennison Avenue, which closed in 2023 and sat empty, leaving part of Birmingham\u2019s District 6 without a full grocery store.<\/p>\n
Customer Maxine DeGraffenreid said she came to the store as soon as she heard it was opening.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen I heard they were opening today and I said, \u2018right around the corner? I can\u2019t wait to go!\u2019 I just got off work and I said \u2018I\u2019ve got to stop by and see, all the great deals they have.\u2019 And I ran over here,\u201d DeGraffenreid said.<\/p>\n
Birmingham District 6 Councilwoman Crystal Smitherman said the closure of the previous store left a gap in the neighborhood.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat kind of left a big void just kind of the way they left unexpectedly. And so the city we\u2019ve been trying to scramble and find somebody and so Carver Jones was such a blessing to come,\u201d Smitherman said.<\/p>\n
What\u2019s inside<\/p>\n
Shoppers will find fresh produce and a full meat counter, restocked daily.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf I need some eggs or anything I can just come right up here and get them and go home!\u201d DeGraffenreid said.<\/p>\n
A pharmacy is coming to the store through a new partnership with Citizen\u2019s Express Pharmacy.<\/p>\n
Shelf space is also set aside for locally owned Alabama brands. The store will offer Discount Tuesdays, providing 10% off for seniors, military members, teachers, and college students.<\/p>\n
Smitherman said the store also supports job development.<\/p>\n
\u201cNot only is it providing fresh food, but also workforce development as well,\u201d Smitherman said.<\/p>\n

The company said it is hiring cashiers, stockers, and workers for the produce, meat, deli, and delivery departments. Carver Jones Market said it is looking to fill those jobs from the neighborhoods that the store serves.<\/p>\n
Carver Jones Market plans to bring the same model to other Birmingham neighborhoods that have lost their grocery stores.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve been looking for one ever since I moved over here and they finally put one right here, I\u2019m so glad they did,\u201d DeGraffenreid said.<\/p>\n
The store is open seven days a week from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM.<\/p>\n
