Officials said cases usually rise between May and August.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFirst things first, absolutely no need to panic,\u201d said Sarah Shrum Davis of the New Mexico Department of Health.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Health officials said cyclospora has sickened people across the country, with 170 cases in Michigan and more than two dozen in Texas so far this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials said the best way to prevent cyclospora is to wash hands before preparing food and wash fresh produce.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo the best way to prevent cyclospora is by hand washing, especially before you prepare food, and washing fresh produce,\u201d said Shrum Davis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At a grocery store, some New Mexicans told KOB 4 they plan to pay closer attention now that the parasite has been confirmed in the state.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes, I definitely want to wash my hands before and after,\u201d said Anthony Sarinana.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How can people protect themselves?<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI want to wash my hands, the stuff that I put into my body because\u2026 it doesn\u2019t sound fun at all,\u201d said Louie Ruelas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGenerally when I juice, I typically scrub the vegetables. I soak them with baking soda\u2026 so I think in the future, just kind of scrub better,\u201d said Jasmine Contreras.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">State health officials said people who develop symptoms should see a doctor instead of trying to diagnose themselves.
