What to know

Louisiana is the state with the 10th highest grocery bill in the U.S., with residents spending a weekly average of $282.95 on groceries, according to WorldAtlas.

The average weekly grocery bill in Louisiana is elevated mostly because of structural weakness within the state’s food distribution network, high vulnerability to weather disruptions and limited retail competition in many regions, says WorldAtlas.

Since a large portion of the state’s population is spread across small and mid-sized communities, there are increased transportation costs for grocers in Louisiana, which raises final prices for consumers.

Louisiana’s location along the Gulf Coast also exposes the state to hurricanes and frequent flooding, and these weather conditions can periodically disrupt supply chains, damage infrastructure and increase costs for retailers. These weather-related risks are factored into the price of everyday goods, according to WorldAtlas.

10 U.S. states with the highest grocery bills according to WorldAtlasHawaiiAlaskaCaliforniaNevadaMississippiWashingtonFloridaNew MexicoTexasLouisiana

Presley Bo Tyler is a reporter for the Louisiana Deep South Connect Team for USA Today.
