Although they paid their bill, the owner decided the lack of a tip was enough to ban them from the establishment.

The confrontation happened outside Ari and Mia’s Small Town Cafe in Miamitown, Ohio. TikTok user @nuu4175 posted a video of the encounter, which racked up more than 2 million views and triggered a discussion over tipping etiquette.

In the footage, the diners point out that tipping isn’t mandatory. The self-identified owner of the cafe agrees before repeatedly saying, “You’re just not welcome back here.” If he agreed they weren’t obligated to tip, what exactly were they being banned for?

    They paid for their meal but that was apparently not enough

The woman recording the encounter holds up a receipt to show that the group paid for their meal. Phillip doesn’t dispute it. “If you don’t have money to tip your servers,” he starts, before one of the diners interrupts to argue that they aren’t obligated to tip.

“You’re 100% correct,” Phillip replies. “You do not.” Then he repeats that they can no longer eat at his restaurant. The TikTok user and her friend also questioned whether the confrontation over a tip was racially motivated.

       @nuu4175

Please do not eat here . This man chased us from across the street and say we are not welcomed back Because we didn’t tip but on our receipt it had money already took it out, this was our first time here & let me tell you the shit had me scared asf I was literally shaken and scared and ready to get the hell Out of there and the worst part I ate they food knowing we wasn’t even welcomed ???? Please do not eat here I literally had a panic attack how shaken I was by this man i honestly loved my food and everything and we got treated like straight crap. Ari & Mia’s Small Town Cafe Ohio Miamitown ,Ohio

♬ original sound – Nuu_nuu

The video summoned a fleet of viewer opinions that offered split perspectives. One commenter insisted, “If you can’t tip don’t sit!!!!!!!!!” Another wondered who would chase customers out of a restaurant over a gratuity.

    Americans can’t agree on the rules of tipping

Tipping might be customary in American restaurants, but that doesn’t mean everyone agrees on the rules. A 2023 Pew Research Center survey found that 92% of Americans who eat at sit-down restaurants always or often tip.

Yet 72% opposed automatic service charges or tips, while 49% said whether tipping is a choice or an obligation depends on the situation. Another 77% considered service quality a huge factor in deciding how much of a tip to leave, if any at all. After all, Britannica & Collins defines a tip as “gratuity” or a “monetary reward” given directly to service workers like waiters, porters, or taxi drivers. Rewards are usually given based on performance, not as an requirement.

On another note, there is a financial reason tips matter so much to restaurant workers, too. Under federal labor rules, employers can pay eligible tipped employees as little as $2.13 per hour in direct wages, provided their tips bring their earnings to at least the federal minimum wage of $7.25. Employers must cover any shortfall, and Ohio has its own higher tipped-wage requirements.

Still, a voluntary tip isn’t the same as an unpaid bill. Phillip acknowledged that the diners weren’t required to leave a tip. He just wasn’t interested in letting them make that choice twice.

Have a tip we should know?
