FARGO, N.D. (WDAY) – At a North Dakota grocery store, one longtime customer\u2019s friendly conversation with a cashier turned out to be lifesaving.<\/p>\n
When customers walk into the Cash Wise grocery store in Fargo, there\u2019s no mistaking the friendly voice of cashier Elvira Gentry. Known for her kindness and warmth, Gentry is a fan favorite, with some customers waiting in line just to see her.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is just so refreshing, and you can feel her presence way back in the line,\u201d said Pam Thorson, a nurse and longtime Cash Wise customer.<\/p>\n
One day, as Thorson was in line getting ready to check out, she and Gentry started talking about breast cancer screenings.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe goes, \u2018I had my mammogram and got squished\u2019 and all that stuff,\u201d Thorson said.<\/p>\n
The two laughed, but when Gentry heard it had been years since Thorson\u2019s last mammogram, she encouraged her to get a checkup.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe said, \u2018I\u2019m going to listen to you girl,\u2019\u201d Gentry said.<\/p>\n
And Thorson did \u2013 she had a physical, ultrasound and mammogram. That mammogram led to an early breast cancer diagnosis, for which Thorson is now taking chemotherapy. <\/p>\n
\u201cWhen she called me and shared with me the results, it broke my heart,\u201d Gentry said.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe was like, \u2018I am so sorry,\u2019 but I told her that she was responsible for saving my life. I tear up every time,\u201d Thorson said. \u201cI am so lucky it got caught when it did, and if it hadn\u2019t been for her, it never would have happened.\u201d<\/p>\n
Thorson\u2019s husband also credits Gentry with saving his wife\u2019s life, thanking the cashier recently over speakerphone.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was shocked. He said, \u2018Elvira, I want to thank you for saving my wife\u2019s life,\u201d Thorson said.<\/p>\n
Sometimes, we can\u2019t predict who will cross out path or why. For Thorson, it was Gentry, the comforting, soft-spoken cashier at Cash Wise, and on this Thanksgiving, both are grateful.<\/p>\n
\u201cI love my customers, and I love what I do,\u201d Gentry said. \u201cYou gotta love what you do to do what you do.\u201d<\/p>\n
Thorson will finish radiation treatment in two weeks.<\/p>\n
