Outlaw, former manager, worked at the restaurant for 12 years before buying it this fall. (Christian Murdock, The Gazette)

The space closed temporarily, for two and a half weeks in September, while Outlaw took over as its new owner. In the meantime, he refreshed and reorganized the space with new paint and added some new memorabilia to the old.

When Clemente told Outlaw and his colleague Vance Smith, who has been a manager at the restaurant for 18 years, that he intended to close the business, Outlaw knew something had to be done to preserve it.

“My only thought was, what is needed to keep us going? How can I look at my regular customers and tell them, ‘Enjoy your last Borriello Brothers pizza ever’? And as I started to explain to several of our loyal (customers) what was going on, they were genuinely sad and voiced their opinions that they did not want Borriello Brothers to close. My mind was made up,” Outlaw said.

The new owner of Borriello Brothers pizza Daniel Outlaw holds a couple slices of the lunch special, a Hawaiian pizza with jalapeños and pickled banana pepers, on Monday, Oct. 12, 2026. (Christian Murdock, The Gazette)

Immediately he negotiated a two-year lease with the building owner, established his own limited liability company, began the process of purchasing the restaurant and started refreshing the space. Smith also agreed to stay on with the business.

For Outlaw, who was raised in New Jersey and started his career in the restaurant and pizza industry at age 18, the business is also more than just his livelihood. He credits Borriello Brothers with helping him turn a new leaf after a life-changing car accident left him dependent on prescription opioids to manage the pain.

He moved to Colorado Springs for a fresh start and soon began working at Borriello Brothers downtown, rebuilding his life.

“Borriello Brothers and this community gave me my life back!” he said.

This welcoming and supportive atmosphere is what he wants to perpetuate. He points to a sign hanging in the dining room: “Believe there is good in the world,” with a hidden message to the reader to “be the good.”

The Colorado Springs community is already demonstrating that tenet. Community members rallied around the business and offered Outlaw their help after an overnight vandal threw a rock into one of the restaurant’s front windows just days after its reopening. One local business offered to install security cameras at the pizza shop for no cost.

The new owner of Borriello Brothers pizza Daniel Outlaw painted the wall and reorganized the pictures as seen Monday, Oct. 12, 2026, on the wall of the Colorado Springs restaurant. (Christian Murdock, The Gazette)

In a post to the Borriello Brothers Facebook page on Oct. 7, Outlaw thanked the community for its love and support. “I promise I will give everything I am to keep this business going,” he wrote in part.

Borriello Brothers will remain what the community knows and loves, serving up its signature handcrafted, hand-tossed, authentic thin-crust New York-style pizza made with fresh ingredients.

“Our dough, sauce and cheese — with our base, anything we make is going to be delicious,” Outlaw said.

The menu will remain “pretty much the same,” including favorites like their New York-style pepperoni or cheese slices and more. Appetizers like mozzarella sticks and garlic cheese bread; chicken wings; salads; pizza by the slice, specialty and classic pies; sandwiches; calzones; pasta; and desserts like cannoli and cookies round out an expansive menu.

New items include crinkle-cut fries as well as the Jalapeno Popper Pizza featuring ham, fresh jalapenos, cream cheese, bacon, mozzarella and cheddar cheese. Another creation, the Chorizo Supreme Pizza featuring chorizo sausage, bacon, ricotta cheese and red onion, will be available as a two-day special from time to time, Outlaw said.

Borriello Brothers was established on Platte Avenue in 1999 by namesake brothers Thomas and John of New York. They later sold it to Clemente, his business partner Rob Raia and a third partner, Frederick Stein, whom Clemente and Raia had partnered with on ownership of other Borriello Brothers restaurants across town.

The original location on Platte was not affected by the sudden closures of at least three others across town in early 2019 that were owned and operated by a limited liability company formed in part by Stein. The Colorado Department of Revenue shut down Stein’s restaurants for failure to pay hundreds of thousands in state sales taxes. The Platte location has continued to dish out its signature menu items in the years since.

Borriello Brothers opens at 11 a.m. Monday through Saturday and at noon on Sundays, according to its website. The shop’s operating hours are tentative while Outlaw seeks additional staff to join his team.
