The company also operates restaurants in Crystal Springs, Star and Simpson County.

                Mark Konradi

            USA TODAY Network, Reuters

A stop-work order that temporarily halted renovations at the future Downtown Jackson home of Shivers Creek Catfish House on Capitol Street has been lifted, according to the owner of the building.

“We have been working closely with the permit office,” building owner Kip Gibery told the Clarion Ledger. “It was just a miscommunication on our part. (Assistant) Chief (Elliott) Holmes with the fire department has been very helpful. We hope to be opened by the National Folk Festival (Nov. 13-15), but it will come down to an accelerated schedule for the health department.”

Gibery owns the building undergoing renovation but is not affiliated with the ownership of Shivers Creek Catfish House. Gibery also owns several other buildings along Capitol Street.

Restaurant planned for growing Capitol Street corridor

The restaurant will be on Capitol Street, a corridor that has become a focal point of efforts to attract new businesses, restaurants and entertainment venues to downtown Jackson.

In recent years, public and private investment has continued along Capitol Street, including redevelopment of historic buildings, new hospitality projects and efforts to increase foot traffic through festivals, events and new retail offerings.

The planned arrival of Shivers Creek Catfish House was welcomed by downtown advocates when it was announced earlier this year, adding another locally owned restaurant to an area that has seen renewed interest from developers and entrepreneurs.

Shivers brings established Mississippi brand downtown

Shivers Creek Catfish House has built a loyal following through its South Mississippi operations and food truck business. The restaurant is known for Mississippi farm-raised catfish and seafood and is owned by restaurateur Dustin Malley.

The downtown Jackson location would represent an expansion for the brand and place the restaurant in the center of one of the city’s largest business districts.

Timing tied to National Folk Festival

The opening carries added weight with Jackson preparing to host the National Folk Festival Nov. 13-15, when thousands of visitors are expected to converge on downtown streets for the nationally recognized celebration of music, dance, food and culture.

The free festival will feature performers from throughout the United States on multiple stages located in Downtown Jackson, with Capitol Street serving as one of the event’s primary corridors.

A successful opening before the festival would give visitors another dining option while adding to the growing lineup of businesses seeking to capitalize on increased activity downtown.

For now, however, the restaurant’s timeline appears dependent on completing remaining construction work and obtaining final inspections and approvals.

Ross Reily is a writer for the Clarion Ledger, part of the USA TODAY Network.
