Mike Kehoe outlined the initiative, called Operation Show-Me the Money, during a Thursday news conference at the Missouri State Capitol.

The operation brings together the Missouri Attorney General’s Office, the U.S. Department of Justice and state agencies to investigate suspected fraud involving public assistance programs.

The initiative was first announced in September, but Kehoe’s latest announcement provides new details about how investigators will identify potential fraud.

The effort will begin with targeted reviews of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly known as SNAP or food stamps.

Investigators will use three approaches to identify potential wrongdoing.

First, authorities will review referrals from existing state investigations and tips submitted by employees who administer benefit programs.

Second, investigators will examine individual assistance programs to identify suspicious transactions and weaknesses that could be exploited.

Third, state and federal authorities will share information across agencies, allowing investigators to identify patterns of potential fraud that might otherwise go undetected.

“Missouri is no place for fraud, and those who think they can cheat the system and steal from hardworking taxpayers are going to be held accountable,” Kehoe said.

Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway said the partnership builds on previous investigations into Medicaid fraud and other financial crimes.

Dedicated investigators from her office’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit will work alongside federal prosecutors.

U.S. Attorney R. Matthew Price, who oversees the Western District of Missouri, said combining state information with federal investigative resources will help authorities detect fraud sooner and pursue stronger cases.

The initiative covers programs distributing approximately $11.5 billion in federal funding to individuals and organizations across Missouri.

Beyond criminal investigations, officials say the operation could lead to administrative changes, stronger oversight requirements and future legislation designed to prevent fraud.

(via Flickr)

Missouri’s food stamp program will be among the first targets of a coordinated state and federal investigation into suspected fraud involving taxpayer-funded benefits.
