Everybody and welcome to todayโ€™s recipe iโ€™m going to share with you a family tradition of ours and that is making old-fashioned vintage amish shortcake this recipe is not in any books it is handwritten through the generations of our family so letโ€™s get started in todayโ€™s video Today weโ€™re going to make a very simple primitive recipe from 1905 and it is amish shortcake and iโ€™m going to share with you the recipe written in the description box below it calls for 3 cups of flour 4 teaspoons of baking powder 2 cups of sugar and 1 4 cup of crisco 1

Cup of milk and 2 large eggs and 3 teaspoons of vanilla the first thing weโ€™re going to do is weโ€™re going to take two large eggs and weโ€™re going to put them in our bowl and then weโ€™re going to add our sugar weโ€™re going to add two cups of sugar

Take our wooden spoon and weโ€™re going to stir it and mix them together to that weโ€™re going to add 1 4 cup of crisco or lard and take our spoon and weโ€™re going to stir that in with it now weโ€™re going to add one cup of milk and 4 teaspoons of baking powder

Now this shortcake is for eating with strawberries but you could use it with any other kind of fruit now weโ€™re going to add the three cups of flour this is just regular white flour so now weโ€™re going to give it a good stir and incorporate it all together

The bowl in which iโ€™m stirring all of this is actually from the late 1800s and now for very important ingredient some homemade vanilla and we add three teaspoons of this the vanilla is what gives it that great amazing flavor iโ€™m gonna give it one last stir

It calls for three eight inch pie pans but iโ€™m gonna use it in two 9 inch all right weโ€™re going to go ahead and pour them into our pans preheat your oven at 375 and this will bake for about 15 to 20 minutes last thing that we do is really important

We take a little bit of sugar and we spread it on the top and there you go this is strawberry shortcake the amish way a very old recipe iโ€™m going to show you what it looks like when weโ€™re finished so our family already ate some of the

Shortcake but iโ€™m going to share with you how we put it all together so what we do is we add the shirt cake and the strawberries there you go now we add the milk strawberry shortcake from my family to yours itโ€™s a simple recipe but i hope

You give it a try because the flavors are very delicate and it is just as good as anything that you have ever ate this makes more than what your family can eat you can freeze it it freezes very well in fact in the summertime i make a lot

Of it so i can freeze it itโ€™s great having it with berries and strawberries even rhubarb itโ€™s great with that you guys tomorrow

  1. I love the old yellowware bowls. Did you know that the lip on the underside of the top ridge was left unglazed so the ladies could sharpen their knives on the ceramic ridge? I have found most people are not aware of that ingenious design.

  2. OH MY GOODNESS! I LOVE LOVE LOVE YOUR PITCHER! BEAUTIFUL! THANKS FOR RECIPE! MMMMMMMโ€ฆ.Blessings from Dawn @ Rich & Dawn in MN ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. I bought strawberries yesterday at Aldi's. $1.29! Best price I've see in a long time. No milk for me. ๐Ÿ˜€. I use whipped cream. ๐Ÿ˜‹ Thanks, Tessie. Will have to put this one in my recipe binder. Blessings. ๐Ÿ’œ

  4. This is what our family called sweet pound cakeโ€ฆand yes we eat it with all kinds of fruit. I didn't know anyone else who poured milk over theirsโ€ฆ hubby had never since it done like that except with cornbread and milk before we got married. I've done it that way all my lifeโ€ฆjust like my great grandma should me. Love this โค๏ธ

  5. Love the milk jug thanks for the recipe. Mom used to make something similar and always had sugar on top. She never wrote it down except the list of ingredients no amounts.

  6. Tessie, I have to give this recipe to my brother and SIL they have blackberries left from last year and there will be tons ready in a couple of weeks!!๐Ÿ˜€โค๐Ÿ™

  7. Goodmorning Tessie! Looks like a wonderful recipe, I will make this cake when I am out of real lemons and whipping cream.. I make lemon cake in my instant pot and make a lemon glaze on top, served with sugared strawberries and heavy whipping cream. Rhubarb, oh I love rhubarb pie. I have never thought about having milk in place of whipping cream, this will help during harder times. Your in my thoughts and prayers. ๐Ÿ™โค๐Ÿ’•

  8. Oh my!!! Made this along with you on the video!!!!!! Wellโ€ฆ guess whatโ€™s for dinner tonight! Hahaha!! I didnโ€™t have milk โ€“ but do have 1/2&1/2โ€ฆ so,I used it. I also used butter as I have no crisco either! It is DELICIOUS!!! Just like I remember as a child!! THANK YOU!!!

  9. Looks very good Tessie. I would measure out a tablespoon of vanilla. My berries are getting ripe. I will try this. Thank you.

  10. Making this right now! We are going to a picnic tomorrow and one of the children there has a peanut allergy. I knew this cake wouldn't have anything questionable like store bought ones. I'm cooking it in a rectangular pan and cutting it into chunks to make a triffle. Can't wait to eat it!

  11. Oh my, I donโ€™t know how I missed this, now I canโ€™t wait to make it. Strawberry shortcake is my favorite!

  12. The bowl you used to make your shortcake is like the smaller one my husband had gotten from his mother when she passed away. Her grandfather was a farmer who took his produce to market on a horse drawn wagon. The crocks were engraved with his name, J. B. Cool. They were packed with their fresh churned butter. I guess they were used on the honor system or a deposit made allowing you to return the crock next visit (the reason behind the farmerโ€™s name engraved on it). Weโ€™ve already passed that crock on to our son after he got married along with some Longaberger baskets his grandmother had.

  13. That beautiful green pitcher looks like depression glass from 1930. If it is not a reproduction itโ€™s worth some $$$

  14. Uh how did I miss this video, this looks lovely and is a little different by adding the milk later, sadly vanilla has gotten so expensive recently but I will definitely try this without with my first red homegrown strawberries.

  15. Becareful with the bowl you used, the paint may have lead or some other toxic material in it.
Looks amazing. I'm going to give it a try.

  16. This video is #14 on the playlist. Video #13 is another person named Pat Barkman about perennials. Interestingโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆ..

  17. This is very similar to what we had growing up. We did it in muffin pans, then broke it up in the bowl. We sugared our berries and scooped them on top, and poured the milk last. We also had a side dish with spicy kielbasa and hot brown mustard. Always loved the shortcake for dinner on hot days! Thanks for sharing!

  18. In the video you say to cook at 375ยฐ but your recipe says to do it at 350ยฐ which should I do?

  19. ๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ“Brings back memories of picking the strawberries and making the short cakes๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ“Oh this looks so good ๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ“

  21. This family recipe for Amish shortcake is a treasure. Thank you for sharing with everyone. I will continue the strawberry playlist as soon as I can after church. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ“
