It'd be a built-in soy sauce dish. Otherwise you can dump it in the lid as is but it is not as neat. Why don't they do this?

    Those corner pockets work well for dipping nigiri. For cut rolls, I prefer to lay them flat and drop direct center.

    But the whole lid is an inset square to hold soy sauce
