Chef has returned with a hot stove and a list of things on his mind. New videos on the late Isaac Hayes’s Instagram account revive the South Park character’s familiar “Hello, children” greeting, then turn him loose on food recalls and people who police Black people doing ordinary things.

The first post opens with a tease: “Guess who’s back in the kitchen.” In the video, Chef says he has spent his time away “cooking, seasoning, stirring things up.” He moves from a joke about needing to check the FDA website before making fruit salad to a promise that “the food is almost ready.”

Then comes the line that sets up his return: “Apparently common sense has been missing longer than I have.”

The follow-up video gets straight to its subject. Captioned “Children, beware of the Karen,” it describes Black people being questioned while grilling in a park, swimming at a pool, and fishing.

When someone asks whether the man cooking is allowed to barbecue, the voice fires back: “Baby, he got ribs, not plutonium.”

The jokes build toward a plain instruction to people confronting strangers who are minding their business: “Leave Black people the hell alone.”

Hayes made that voice inseparable from Chef when South Park debuted in 1997. As the school cafeteria cook, Chef was someone Stan, Kyle, Cartman, and Kenny could approach when the adults around them were no help. His advice could be surprisingly direct or detour into a soul song, delivered in Hayes’s unmistakable baritone.

The character also reached beyond the show: the “Chef Aid” episode spawned a soundtrack album.

His return also brings back an unresolved chapter in South Park history. Hayes’s time on the series ended in 2006 after its Scientology satire, and Chef was written out in an episode titled “The Return of Chef”.

Hayes died in 2008. Years later, his son Isaac Hayes III challenged the account that his father had personally chosen to quit, saying someone made the decision for him after he suffered a stroke.

It is unclear who the current voice for Chef is, whether AI was used, or whether he’ll make a guest appearance on South Park anytime soon.
