Plant-based food and hip-hop go back further than most people think. From dead prez’s “Be Healthy” to Stic.man’s years of vegan advocacy to the movement to name Health & Wellness the culture’s “10th element,” the golden era always had a green streak running through it. This year, One Green Planet is bringing that spirit to one table in New York City.
The Chef’s Golden Table is a five-course, 100% plant-based tasting menu where every course is named after a golden-era landmark — a dinner that eats like a mixtape. It’s vegan soul food, plated with intention by Chef Elijah Brumfield, served at a single shared table for a handful of guests each night.
Here’s what makes it different: it’s not a themed restaurant, it’s a night inside the era. Between courses, Chef Elijah Brumfield steps out from behind the pass to tell the story of where hip-hop came from — the block party to the boom bap — while the music and visuals of the golden age fill the room. And he lived it: before the kitchen he worked inside hip-hop itself (A&R, music supervisor, Def Jam and EMI), then learned to cook at his father’s side at Harlem’s legendary Sylvia’s, later cooking for Obama and Oprah. His own photography from inside the culture — collected in his book Golden — is displayed and narrated through the night.
And every course is named for a hip-hop landmark and built to echo it — from “My Adidas” to “Ladies First,” “Brooklyn Zoo,” “Tonight’s Da Night,” and “Award Tour.” Five courses, five landmarks, one turntable, 100% plant-based.
This isn’t a big banquet. It’s intimate on purpose: a single shared table with only a handful of seats each night. Come solo and meet people who love this music and this food as much as you do, or bring your crew and take the whole table.
