To celebrate the Oct. 9 grand opening at 6-8 Washington St. in Tenafly, Capon collaborated with the fast-growing bagel brand to develop a limited-time carrot cake schmear. According to PopUp Bagels, the flavor will be available at the shop while supplies last.

Festivities will run from 8–11 a.m. and will include a DJ, merch giveaways and other surprises, the chain said.

Capon said, “I’m beyond excited for PopUp Bagels open in Tenafly, right in my own backyard. And of course, I had to get in on the schmear game.”

He explained, “We came up with a carrot cake schmear that’s fun, a little nostalgic, and ridiculously delicious. Great bagels, great schmear, right here in Tenafly. What’s better than that?”

A 25-year industry veteran, Capon is known for his acclaimed restaurants, award-winning burgers and television appearances on “Chopped” and “Beat Bobby Flay.” His portfolio of eateries includes New York City spots Little Maven and Flyfish Club, as well as several brands in Las Vegas.

He recently made his Bergen County debut with Capon’s Burgers in Paramus and Capon’s Chophouse in Hackensack.

Schmear we go

Capon isn’t the first big name to team up with PopUp Bagels. The concept has also collaborated with brands like Oishii, Mike’s Hot Honey, Oreo and the New York Post

Additionally, the two-time winner of Brooklyn BagelFest’s “Best Bagel” award has attracted investors including Paul Rudd, Michal Strahan, Patrick Schwarzenegger and Michael Phelps.

After Adam Goldberg began the business six years ago as a pandemic era pop-up in the backyard of his Connecticut home, it has grown into a fast-expanding chain with a strong social media following. Goldberg is a New Jersey native who grew up in Livingston and Short Hills.

The brand is known for serving hot whole bagels in packs of three or more with rotating flavored schmears, such as spinach artichoke cream cheese, truffle butter, cinnamon butter and “Pickle de Gallo.” And, because PopUp Bagels encourages customers to “grip, rip and dip” their bagels into whipped schmears, it does not offer traditional pre-sliced bagel sandwiches.

On a roll

Since establishing a franchise program in 2024, the Connecticut-based chain has more than doubled its footprint to 50-plus locations nationwide. By the end of next year, it aims to have 100 stores.

Tenafly marks the second of at least two dozen PopUp Bagels locations slated to open statewide. Franchisee Just Pop introduced the brand to the state over the summer with a shop in Westfield.

Just Pop partner Suhel Ahmed shared, “We’ve been looking forward to bringing PopUp Bagels to Tenafly and becoming part of such a tight-knit community after the successful opening in Westfield.”

He went on, “What PopUp has built is pretty special — it takes something as familiar as a bagel run and makes it fun, social and truly memorable. Bergen County has always had a deep appreciation for great food and neighborhood spots, and we’re excited to add PopUp to that mix.”

Ahmed’s group is involved with several other franchises, such as Dave’s Hot Chicken, Dunkin’ and Little Caesars.
