One of South Bristol’s most stunning architectural buildings will be transformed from a former bank into a Chinese restaurant, according to new plans recently submitted.
Each week Bristol City Council receives dozens of planning applications seeking permission for a whole range of developments.
Over the past seven days, those applications also included work to fix water leaks at a 19-flat block above a Tesco Express and a restaurant and takeaway to replace a vehicle repairs business.
Here’s this week’s round-up of notable planning applications submitted to the council.
Every week dozens are validated by the local authority and we have selected some of the more interesting proposals.
All planning applications submitted to the council have to be validated and are available for inspection by the public.
Anyone is also allowed to submit comments about the applications — whether in support or objection.
The majority of applications are decided by planning officers at the council under delegated powers.
However, some will go before elected councillors who sit on planning committees.
No dates have been set for when the planning applications below will be determined.
They can be viewed by going to the planning portal on Bristol City Council’s website.
Chinese at Grade II-listed former bank
The old Nat West bank in Bedminster Parade would become a top-end Chinese restaurant.
The building’s owners have applied for permission to change the Grade II-listed property inside and out.
In planning documents, architects said: “The principal banking hall will be retained as the primary space, with its generous proportions and architectural features forming the focal point of the restaurant.

“A new feature bar is proposed within the location formerly occupied by the bank counters and teller area.
“The existing service areas to the rear of the building will continue to accommodate the primary back-of-house functions.
“New commercial kitchen facilities will be located within the existing kitchen areas, making use of established servicing routes and reducing the need for alterations to the historic fabric.
“Existing strong rooms and former secure banking spaces will be adapted to provide customer toilet facilities and ancillary storage.
“The scheme has been carefully developed to respect the building’s architectural and historic significance while introducing a high-quality Chinese restaurant that complements the character and vitality of Bedminster Parade.”
Leaky Tesco and apartment block works
Urgent repairs would be carried out to a building with 19 flats above a Tesco Express.
The works, at the Tenon Building in Upper Sydney Street, Southville, would ensure structural integrity and long-term maintenance of the building.
In planning documents, the applicant’s agents said: “There have been fundamental structural failures to the render and parts of the roof that are causing water ingress and worsening structural damage to the building.

“Consequently, there is an urgent need to resolve these issues.”
They said two of the 19 flats were not fit to live in because of the water leaks and damp, while many of the windows at the other apartments were obscured by scaffolding.
Vehicle repairs pound to restaurant and indoor sports
The ground floor of a building in Gas Lane, St Philips, would become a restaurant with indoor games, such as snooker and pool.
Developers are seeking a change of use from the current purpose of vehicle repairs and storage.
Takeaway and delivery food would also be available.
New windows would be installed as well as aluminium sliding doors in front of the existing roller shutters.
