KAIMUKI, Hawaii (Island News) — A portion of 11th Avenue will remain closed in Kaimuki after the roof of Happy Days Chinese Seafood Restaurant partially collapsed on Tuesday afternoon.

The Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) reported the incident at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2026, at Happy Days Chinese Seafood Restaurant located at the Waialae Plaza, which was initially classified as a confined rescue incident.

Honolulu Emergency Medical Services treated four women believed to be in their 80s who were hurt from the partial ceiling collapse. One of the women suffered from cuts and she was taken to an emergency room in stable condition. The other three women declined to be taken to the hospital.

After the city’s Department of Planning and Permitting conducted inspections on the building, it identified that a critical interior truss has collapsed, and there appears to be tilting of the parapet wall facing 11th Avenue. This has raised concerns about structure such as the wall’s stability and the potential for collapse if the building deteriorates even more.

The city has closed a portion of 11th Avenue between Waialae Avenue and Harding Avenue out of precaution of the building affecting this part of the sidewalk and road.

There is currently no set date on when 11th Avenue will be safe to reopen due to the amount of repairs the building requires. The property owner is cooperating with the city on work to shore up the wall as soon as possible.

Road users are advised to avoid the affected portion of 11th Avenue and use alternate routes. Pedestrians are also advised to avoid the area until further notice.

The city said it will provide updates as it continues to monitor the structure.
