Gordon Ramsay’s Restaurants Emit Unbearable Smell, Building Residents Allege

Residents of a high-end apartment building in Washington D.C. are dealing with a kitchen nightmare.

Residents living above the Gordon Ramsay Street Pizza and Gordon Ramsay Street Burger restaurants in a building in the swanky Penn Quarter of the city are complaining that the smell of grease and smoke from the restaurant is leaking into their apartments somehow, according to a report from The Washington Post published on Friday, August 21. They report that the smells get stronger during the peak hours of the restaurant and often subside in the morning before it opens.

“The smell just hits you like running into a wall,” one neighbor, who asked to remain anonymous, told the outlet.

Some residents are going as far as to avoid being in their homes at the peak hours and even wearing N95 masks when they are home, according the outlet, after learning that levels of particulate matter were well above the World Health Organization’s air quality guidelines.

Representatives for Gordon Ramsay Restaurants and Douglas Development initially took residents’ complaints seriously, the Post reported. They agreed to deep clean the flue, leak test the vent system and do a test to ensure the fans were functioning.

When those efforts did not work, the outlet reports that Gordon Ramsay Restaurants and Douglas Development say they spoke to the original installer, who informed them that the restaurant uses a different venting system than the apartments. Despite that, residents and the property manager reportedly maintain that the restaurant is somehow to blame.

“After discussing internally, we feel that we have made a good-faith effort to investigate these complaints over the past few months,” the organization wrote in an email to the property manager viewed by The Washington Post.

It added, “… We appreciate your diligence but given the meeting on site with the contractor as well as our knowledge of the building systems, we do not believe this issue is related to our restaurant.”

Now, the two parties are deadlocked, with Gordon Ramsay Restaurants alleging the smell is coming from residents’ cooking, not their establishments.
