Dulan’s Soul Food Kitchen, one of Inglewood’s most recognizable Black-owned restaurants, has been awarded a $250,000 grant through the city’s Destination Market Street program.

Dulan’s is among 35 businesses initially selected to receive grants of up to $250,000 through the Market Street initiative, an $8.5 million state-funded program designed to revitalize downtown Inglewood by supporting exterior and interior improvements. PCR Business Finance, a community development financial institution, is handling the application process for the program.

So far, 23 grants have been awarded, nine are pending and three have withdrawn their grant requests, according to Karly Katona, managing director with Trifiletti Consulting Group that is working with the city and the program. Katona provided a list of the grant awardees below:

Owner Terry Dulan said the funding will be used to update the restaurant’s façade, renovate an existing event space and create a more modern look.

“I want to improve the exterior of the building, paint and add signage,” Dulan said. “This location was originally three separate units but I want to redesign it so that it appears as one unit on the corner.”

Dulan said he’s currently working with the city to get the building plans approved and hopes to have his project completed in six months.

Located in the heart of downtown Inglewood on East Manchester Boulevard, Dulan’s has become a staple in the community for the last 25 years. Originally founded by the late Adolf Dulan, and now operated by his son Terry Dulan, the restaurant has built a loyal following for its traditional soul food while serving as a gathering place.

The improvements Terry Dulan has planned are also intended to help the restaurant remain competitive as downtown Inglewood attracts more visitors from nearby entertainment venues, including SoFi Stadium, and prepares for the Super Bowl in February and the 2028 Olympic Games.

“It’s always going to help when there’s better curb appeal,” Dulan said. “It’ll attract better businesses and other patrons. I think it’s a good thing.”

The LA Local reached out to Bernard McCrumby, Inglewood’s development services director, but did not hear back.

McCrumby told The LA Local in March that revitalizing Market Street “has always been a priority.” He said city officials want the street to become a cultural hub that represents the best parts of Inglewood.

As for Dulan, he said he hopes the improvements will help make Market Street a vibrant cultural destination.

“I want to keep producing good food, good customer service and I hope that the community will continue to support us as we give back to the community,” Dulan said.
