SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) – Angelo’s Family Restaurant on the south side of South Bend will close its doors in December.
Customers have been flooding in since the news broke.
Customers reflect on years of memories
Larry Perez, a longtime customer, said he has been coming to the restaurant for the past 15 years.
“I’m going to miss it. When they close down, I’m going to miss it,” Perez said.
Angelo’s Family Restaurant opened in July of 2000 at its south side location and has become a staple for many.
Perez said a few things make the restaurant so special.
“The friendliness of the people, and their prices are cheap, and it’s not far from home, and it’s a great place to be,” Perez said.
Dustin Ross, another customer, also shared his experience with the restaurant.
“When I was a kid, we used to come here after church on Sundays, and this has always been a really good place,” Ross said. “Sad to see the place go. Really liked Angelo’s.”
Owner says lease is up
Owner Tim Demetriou said their lease is up and the landlord is looking to sell. His father, Angelo — a Greek immigrant — dreamt of opening a restaurant.
“Coming toward the end, we remember all the memories made, our family and other families that have passed through these doors, hearing all the stories,” Ross said.
Theresa Demetriou, Angelo’s daughter-in-law, said the hardest part will be not seeing the familiar faces.
“I’ve been here since I was 18 years old. It’s like I’ve seen families have kids of their own,” Theresa Demetriou said. “I’m like, ‘I remember you as a little girl. Now you have your own daughter.’ It’s just bittersweet,”
Tim Demetriou said he is grateful for the past 26 years.
“It’s something great to be a part of and experience and realize we had such an impact on the community. It’s very heartwarming,” Tim Demetriou said.
The restaurant’s final day is December 13, 2026. The family says they look forward to the future.
