K&K Soul Food has been on Donald Lee Hollowell since back when it was still called Bankhead. Opened in 1968 in a former pool hall, the family-run soul food kitchen has stayed put as the neighborhood changed around it. Inside, not much has changed either—expect a few familiar faces behind the cafeteria line and a steady flow of locals, elders who’ve probably been coming here for decades, and workers still in uniform.
This place can get packed during lunch and dinner, but the buffet line moves fast. The staff know the neighborhood regulars well, so they work the order line with telepathic speed, filling up styrofoam containers with crispy fried chicken or fall-off-the-bone turkey wings. Some of the sides could use a little more seasoning (the cabbage and collards, especially), but this is a solid stop for comfort food and nostalgia from a place that’s been serving the Westside for over half a century.
Food RundownFried Chicken
Crisp skin and seasoning that actually sinks into the meat, not just the surface. A solid order.
Turkey Wing
Get this. The meat barely hangs on to the bone—it’s that tender—and the seasoning leans Thanksgiving.

Cabbage
Skip this one unless you’re planning to doctor it up at home. It’s bland and needs help.
Collards
Disappointing. These could use some basic love—salt, pepper, garlic, anything.
Peach Cobbler
Good flavor with cinnamon spice and plenty of sugar, but it’s so watery you’ll wish you had a straw.
