A downtown Milwaukee seafood restaurant has abruptly closed.
Lowcountry, 1114 N. Water St., posted to Facebook on Aug. 30 that it “has closed its doors for good.”
“Five years, thousands of tables, and a whole lot of good nights,” the post said. “We’re grateful for every one of you who walked in, sat down, and made this place feel like ours together.”
Lowcountry opened in Milwaukee in 2020 at the former site of a Bar Louie. The Chicago-based small restaurant chain, which opened its first location in 2015, specializes in southern-inspired seafood boils.

The restaurant chain has three remaining locations, all in Chicago. A fourth location, in Merrillville, Indiana, closed a week before the Milwaukee location’s closure, sharing a similar message to its social media.
Lowcountry didn’t immediately respond to questions about the reasoning for its closure.
It’s the most recent in a series of closures of North Water Street businesses.
Silk on Water Exotic Gentleman’s Club announced Aug. 28 that it would close temporarily, citing public safety concerns tied to recent violence on Water Street.
On the same block, Duke’s on Water and the adjoining Varsity closed in May. The bar’s general manager told the Journal Sentinel at the time that the closure was due to the building being sold, but mentioned recent violence and shootings as contributing factors.
The Milwaukee Police Department filed an application in early August to operate the former location of Duke’s as a public safety building, but hasn’t announced details.
Another Water Street restaurant, Vagabond, closed in July, citing several years of slowing sales.
