DARIEN — Lykos Taverna, a Greek restaurant serving Mediterranean food is coming to Darien Commons at 140 Heights Road taking over the spot occupied by Seamore’s which closed early November.
Restaurant owner Euripides Pelekanos said he is aiming for a soft opening and dinner service in mid-February if everything goes to plan.
“Our team is burning the midnight oil to ensure we are ready for our guests,” Pelekanos said.
Lykos Taverna is an independent restaurant, he said.
“I’m very excited,” said Darien First Selectman Jon Zagrodzky. “We have no Greek restaurants in Darien, so this will be a first for us. These guys seem to be a terrific operation and I’m really looking forward to having my first meal there.”
The now shuttered Seamore’s opened in 2023 as a sustainable seafood restaurant. But all eight Seamore’s locations including the six eateries in New York City and the ones in Arlington, Va. and Darien permanently closed due to financial struggles, its website said.
The menu at Lykos will be “tightly curated,” focusing on “high quality, fresh ingredients,” Pelekanos said.
“Don’t expect a Greek diner size menu at Lykos,” he said.
The taverna will also feature “healthy classics,” such as whole lavraki, a Mediterranean sea bass with capers and preserved lemon, Another menu item is grilled sardines with charred lagana, a traditional Greek flatbread and chermoula, a zesty North African condiment.
Other items include Wagyu skewers and 14-hour marinated pork and Greek staples such as grilled octopus, Mediterranean dips and traditional Greek salads and mezzes.
“We chose Darien because it is a community deeply rooted in family, which aligns perfectly with our values,” Pelekanos said. “We believe there is a genuine need for a fun, chef-driven Greek restaurant in this area and feel Lykos Taverna is the perfect fit.”
Zagrodzky said the location in Darien Commons should be good for business for the new eatery due to it’s high visibility on the corner by the busy Knight’s Road.
“It’s going to really shine, once they get it set up and get the signage up,” Zagrodzky said.
The restaurant’s interior is getting “fit out,” according to Director of Land Use Jeremy Ginsberg. The Planning and Zoning department recently approved signage for the taverna, which will be done in blue and white.
Restaurants attract both residents and people from out of town, Zagrodzky said.
“Having good restaurants, I think, is a real attraction for Darien,” he said.
