A York restaurant which only opened in its new home last month will soon have to close for major repairs.
Sloppy’s Bar and Kitchen opened on Castlegate on Friday 21 August.
It had closed its Woodthorpe venue the previous month, and the move marked its return to the city centre – as Sloppy’s first started as a kiosk in York city centre in 2018.
At present, Sloppy’s is still open and trading. But soon the building has to undergo major repairs.
Last week the restaurant closed for a couple of days after a pipe became blocked.
In social media posts, owners Molly McGrath and Leon Sledmore said: “Upon further inspection they found a collapsed pipe.

“While the blockage has been fixed, the ongoing issue of the collapse is being investigated. As far as we know for now, major works will need to be done to repair it.
“This will mean digging down through our beautiful new restaurant, as well as the removal of some walls. Meaning we will have to close while the work is carried out.”
Number 1 Castlegate dates back to the early 1700s and is Grade II listed. The couple have been left reeling by the discovery.
“We’re absolutely heartbroken,” they said. “It’s been hard to come to terms with, and although we don’t know exactly when or for how long we’ll need to close for at the moment, we thought it was best to share it with you all.”
There’s one thing we can all do to help out, Molly and Leon said. “We’re open as normal for now, so please come, enjoy, eat and drink to your hearts content.
“As soon as we have more information on the matter we will update everyone.”
