COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — A new Chinese restaurant specializing in Hunan-style cuisine has opened on Bethel Road, adding to the area’s growing dining scene.
Hunan Bistro, located at 5230 Bethel Center Mall, moved into a space formerly occupied by K House. After finding success in cities like Cincinnati, Middletown and Chicago, the restaurant has now moved into Central Ohio.
Authentic Hunan-style cooking is the focus of the restaurant, with a menu complemented by grilled skewers, braised beef over noodles, pork belly and vegetable dry pot and American-Chinese dishes like General Tso’s chicken.
“We cook that Hunan style, so the flavor is definitely Hunan,” chef and co-owner Sarah Cai said.
Cai says her family recipes were the driving force that helped launch and build three successful restaurants.
Cai along with her husband and co-owner, David Mei are both from China’s southeastern Hunan province.
Mei says Hunan Bistro is special because aside from their spicy hot oil, they do not make sauces in advance and instead develop flavors in the wok, made-to-order style.
“We very much believe in the quality and authenticity of our food,” Mei said.
Hunan Bistro is open six days a week from 3 p.m. to 1 a.m. and is closed on Tuesday.
