Longtime San Antonio soul food spot Mrs. Kitchen is reaching out to locals for help after financial issues shuttered the restaurant.
Rising costs forced the family eatery to close its doors, according to a GoFundMe launched this week by owner and head chef Garlan McPherson. He started the restaurant in 2011, inspired by his grandmother’s cooking.
“I have always tried to be a blessing in the community and I am asking the community to be a blessing to my business at this time,” he wrote.
McPherson is hoping that with the help of donations, customers may one day be able to come back and enjoy a plate of fried chicken. So far, the fundraiser has raised about $1,400 of its $40,000 goal.
Mrs. Kitchen started out in a small cottage on the East Side, but the popularity of the food quickly grew too big for the building and McPherson began the hunt for a new location. Then the pandemic hit, and the restaurant converted into a drive-thru model.
In 2021 the restaurant finally moved to a bigger space in Windcrest, the same location that closed recently. Without community support, it may not reopen.
“I understand that a lot of folks are going through hardships at this time but if you find it in your heart to help my small business, it would be greatly appreciated,” McPherson wrote in the fundraiser.
