KANNAPOLIS — The Kannapolis-based pizza joint, Corner Crust, is helping the fight against childhood cancer one slice at a time.
Working with Pizza Bib, a national pizza box company that makes boxes that double as bibs, Corner Crust is joining the “Taking a Slice Out of Cancer” campaign. As part of Pizza Bib’s new Pizza for Good initiative, pizzerias around the country are giving back to the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation (NPCF) through the month of September, Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and National Cheese Pizza Month.
Corner Crust in Kannapolis and Concord are among eight pizza joints around the country part of the initiative and are the only representatives in North Carolina. For every slice they sell in the commemorative pizza box, Corner Crust donates $0.43 and more on top of that. Customers are also able to round up on their purchase to go to the initiative.
Corner Crust Owner Hector Zumaeta emphasizes the impacts that these donations have on real families.
“Seeing someone that has cancer at eight months old, a year old, you’re seeing families that are tossed up between being with their kid in the hospital or having to go to work and pay the bills. If there’s a way to, one, finance more research and, two, support those families through the process because emotionally it’s awful but financially it’s awful, too,” Zumaeta said.
The NPCF serves families affected by childhood cancer. By their estimates, roughly 43 children in the U.S. are diagnosed with cancer every day.
“No parent should ever have to hear the words ‘your child has cancer,’ but every day, 43 families do. This partnership with Pizza Bib turns something as small as a pizza order into something that matters: funding for research that gives kids a real shot at a better outcome. We are grateful to every pizzeria and every customer who takes part,” NPCF Chief Growth and Impact Officer Dawn Zachman said.
Zumaeta has been a fan of the Pizza Bib boxes for years working in the pizza business and was excited to partner with them on this initiative. The specialized pizza boxes for Corner Crust have already been popular according to Zumaeta.
“The response has been huge. I can’t believe it. It’s been really exciting to see the feedback, and we only launched this a few days ago,” Zumaeta said.
Corner Crust is also supposed to get a permanent Pizza Bib box in the coming months, as Zumaeta has been working with their team on a custom design. When they roll out, they will be the first restaurant in
While the initiative is only running through September, Zumaeta wants to make this an annual tradition to give back to the cause. Additionally, those interested in supporting the cause can donate directly at pizzaforgood.org.
