DETROIT – Detroit’s Eastern Market transformed into a sandwich lover’s dream Sunday, as dozens of local vendors fired up grills, stacked flavors and sold out favorites at the annual Detroit Sandwich Party. Now in its third year, the event continues to grow — drawing bigger crowds and bolder bites with each passing season.
“We’ve got 50 different vendors. It’s madness,” said Carlos Parisi, Detroit Sandwich Party organizer.
The event gave local businesses a chance to show off the flavors that make Detroit’s food scene unique.
“There’s just so much talent. I can’t wait to sample some of the sandwiches. Hopefully I have time to later,” said Miranda Clark with James Oliver.
Among the vendors was Chef Greg’s Soul-N-The Wall, a staple of Detroit’s food community with nearly 20 years in the business. The restaurant is known for its signature boogaloo sandwich — something owner Gregory Beard says you simply can’t find anywhere else.
“There’s only one place to get a boogaloo sandwich and that’s Chef Greg’s Soul-N-The Wall,” Beard said.
His son, Gregory Beard Jr., was on hand to help serve the crowd. “I got one in chicken, I got one in steak, I got one in hamburger,” he said.
Not every vendor at the event was a longtime staple. Some were brand new to the scene. Andy French of The Cafe Moto was among the newest faces at the event. “We just finished our third week being open out in Ferndale,” French said.
Despite their differences in experience, all 50 vendors shared one thing — a passion for food and for Detroit.
“First and foremost I mean if this is this many sandwiches coming out here that’s a big deal like clearly we aren’t the only sandwich creators, but that’s a lot of sandwiches,” Beard Jr. said.
For those who missed the Sandwich Party, many of the vendors operate their own local shops throughout metro Detroit and can be visited year-round.
