Former Thiensville restaurant building, The Cheel, sold

The building that used to house the restaurant known as The Cheel in Thiensville has been sold nearly two years after its closure.

The building that used to house the restaurant known as The Cheel in Thiensville has been sold nearly two years after its closure.

The Cheel on Main Street and Buntrock Avenue was a local staple from 2014 to when they announced their closure in 2024.

In September 2020, The Cheel experienced a significant setback when a fire caused extensive damage to the building. The restaurant underwent an extensive restoration process and was able to reopen in November 2023.

Restaurateurs Fatima and Hanish Kumar, owners of downtown Milwaukee’s popular dining destinations Saffron and Aya, have officially acquired the building.

In a release, the two said it’s an opportunity to bring new energy and a new culinary destination to a property that’s been part of the downtown landscape.

“We are thrilled to finalize the purchase of 105 Main Street,” said Fatima Kumar. “This property is a focal point for downtown Thiensville, and securing it allows us to invest directly in the future growth and vibrant energy of the local community.”

It’s unclear what type of restaurant the new owners are working on, but they are collaborating with chefs to curate a fresh experience and build on the previous establishment.

More details about the restaurant will be shared in the future, the owners said.
