August 31 was the last night anyone got their crab legs cracked for them at that counter.
Mikann Shabu, the luxury Japanese shabu shabu room at 5555 Gilbert Road near the Richmond Oval, has closed after 14 months.
The restaurant announced the closure on Instagram.
The notice went up in Chinese and English, and it does not blame the room or the rent.
“As part of our overall business planning and future development direction, and after careful consideration, Mikann Shabu’s final day of operation will be August 31, 2026,” it reads.
The restaurant closed after business hours that day.
What Richmond lost is a format almost nobody else here ran.
Mikann built the whole room around one long counter with an induction hob at every seat, so each guest cooked in their own pot rather than reaching into a shared one.
Then the staff did the cooking anyway.

They deshelled the shrimp, cracked the crab legs, and cut the corn off the cob at the table, which turned a DIY category into something closer to counter service at a sushi bar.
At the end of the meal, the leftover broth went back to the kitchen and came out as congee.
You could also order a drink from Lattea next door and bring it in.
Mikann is a Dinesty Group brand, so this is one concept ending rather than a company going under.
Dinesty Dumpling House, Piping Hot and Lattea all continue.

That matters practically, because the points in your membership account did not die with the restaurant.
The notice says existing points stay valid and can be redeemed at Dinesty Dumpling House, both the 5555 Gilbert Road location and the CF Richmond Centre food court stall, and at Piping Hot.
The comment section is where the harder read is.
Alongside the usual goodbyes, one commenter wrote that he had wanted to try it but hesitated because of the price.
That is one person on one post, not a verdict on why a restaurant closed.
It is still the kind of thing worth noticing under a high-end hot pot concept that lasted a little over a year in a city with a lot of hot pot.
