NORTH CHARLESTON — At work, Rebecca Sakran refers to her boss as Joey. But everywhere else he’s just dad.
Together, the father-daughter duo owns Joey’s Pizzeria, which opened in December inside the recently revamped Shoppes at Montague Corners at 5060 Dorchester Road. The counter-serve spot sells slices, 14-inch and 18-inch pies, as well as Italian American-inspired appetizers and entrees, such as fried raviolis, garlic knots, double-fried chicken wings and penne pasta with red sauce.

The Sakrans moved from upstate New York to Charleston in 2008. Joey, whose brother is Jason Sakran, former Charleston City councilman and Bon Banh Mi Southeast Asian Kitchen co-owner, worked at Boeing for nearly two decades before retiring to open his dream pizzeria.
His pizza, which Rebecca Sakran said is slightly doughier than a typical New York-style slice, is naturally the restaurant’s specialty, though the meatballs are a signature item, too. According to Sakran, they’re prepared using the same recipe her dad has been feeding her and her brother their entire lives.
“They taste like being a kid,” she said.
Joey’s Pizzeria is open from 4-9 p.m. Sunday through Monday, 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and noon-9 p.m. Saturday. For more information, visit joeyspizzasc.com.
