That’s exactly what happened to guests holding tables at Steakhouse 71 inside Disney’s Contemporary Resort earlier this week, when the popular restaurant closed with almost no notice and canceled reservations guests had booked well in advance. Now, the reason behind that abrupt shutdown has finally come to light, and it arrives alongside fresh construction updates happening just outside the restaurant’s walls.

We’ve learned the reason for the unexpected closure of Steakhouse 71 at Disney’s Contemporary Resort. The restaurant closed on September 6, and guests who already had reservations found them canceled without much explanation at the time. Now, Cast Members have reportedly been told the closure came down to “unplanned maintenance,” finally giving guests a concrete answer after a day of speculation.
The good news is that the disruption appears to have been short lived. The Walt Disney World website currently shows Steakhouse 71 open with reservations available again, suggesting whatever maintenance issue forced the closure has since been resolved.
How Guests First Found Out Something Was Wrong

Guests heading to Disney’s Contemporary Resort for a meal at Steakhouse 71 ran into a genuinely confusing situation on September 6. This wasn’t simply a case of no new reservations being available, which happens fairly often at popular Disney restaurants. Guests who already had confirmed tables booked reportedly had those reservations canceled outright.
According to WDW News Today, one guest shared on Reddit that Disney had unexpectedly canceled their September 6 reservation. That original post has since been deleted, but another commenter reportedly said the exact same thing had happened to them. That combination, a same day closure paired with active reservation cancellations, made this situation considerably more disruptive than a typical fully booked night.
A Restaurant With Real History Behind Its Name

Steakhouse 71 isn’t one of Walt Disney World’s original dining locations, but its name deliberately ties back to the resort’s history. The restaurant opened in 2021 during Walt Disney World’s 50th Anniversary celebration, replacing The Wave, of American Flavors, which had previously occupied the same space inside the Contemporary Resort. The “71” in the restaurant’s name references 1971, the year Walt Disney World officially opened in Central Florida.
Steakhouse 71 also functions as something of an East Coast counterpart to Steakhouse 55, which used to operate at the Disneyland Hotel in California before permanently closing. Unlike a typical steakhouse focused mainly on dinner, Steakhouse 71 runs across multiple meal periods, serving breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner throughout the day. That broader schedule means a full day closure like this one had the potential to disrupt far more meals than a single dinner service alone.
Why a One Day Closure Still Created Real Headaches
Losing a dinner reservation might sound like a minor inconvenience in the middle of a Disney World vacation, but dining reservations often serve as the backbone guests build entire days around. Many visitors book their most important meals weeks in advance, then plan park time, transportation, Lightning Lane selections, and resort breaks around those specific reservations.
That structure makes a same day cancellation especially disruptive, and the Contemporary Resort’s location makes it even more relevant. The hotel sits within walking distance of Magic Kingdom and connects directly to the park via the Resort Monorail, meaning guests touring Magic Kingdom that day could easily have planned to slip back to the Contemporary for a meal without traveling anywhere else. When that plan suddenly falls apart, finding a comparable table service option elsewhere on short notice isn’t always simple, especially if guests chose Steakhouse 71 specifically for its menu, pricing, or convenient location.
The Contemporary Resort’s Bigger Construction Story
Steakhouse 71’s brief closure comes as Disney’s Contemporary Resort continues working through a much larger exterior refurbishment project that’s been unfolding for over a year. That project began in September 2024, starting with Bay Lake Tower before eventually migrating over to the main Contemporary Tower building, where scrim and scaffolding have stretched across the side of the resort’s recognizable A-Frame structure.
In early August, the refurbishment reached the Bay Lake side of the resort, with scaffolding and dark green construction walls going up in that area. Then on August 26, WDWNT reported that a crane had arrived on the north side of the Contemporary Resort as work on the A-Frame building’s exterior continued. Photos shared at the time showed the majority of the fourth floor observation deck blocked off with rolling planters, likely a safety measure since that area sits directly beneath the crane’s arm. The crane itself is parked in a service area on the resort’s northern side, surrounded by orange traffic cones.
Beige scrim and scaffolding remain visible across the front of the resort as construction continues, though the fabric covering has reportedly shifted somewhat over time. Disney originally projected the refurbishment would wrap up in September 2025, then pushed that timeline back to July 2026, and has since updated the official Contemporary Resort webpage to indicate construction will now continue through late 2027.
What Guests Can Still Expect During All This
Despite the ongoing construction, Disney has confirmed that monorail and bus transportation, pools, restaurants, and most other hotel amenities remain fully available to guests throughout the refurbishment project. Families staying at or visiting the Contemporary should simply expect to see or hear construction activity during the day, on top of whatever operational hiccups, like Steakhouse 71’s brief closure, might pop up along the way.
Watching for What Happens Next
For now, there’s no indication Steakhouse 71 is heading toward a lengthy refurbishment or permanent closure of its own, separate from the larger exterior work happening around the resort. Disney’s own calendar showing the restaurant back open with reservations available is a strong sign this was exactly what it was described as, a short term maintenance interruption rather than the start of something bigger.
Guests with upcoming reservations at Steakhouse 71 may still want to double check the restaurant’s operating status shortly before their visit, particularly given how quickly this situation developed and resolved. With the Contemporary Resort’s broader refurbishment now stretching into late 2027, it’s also worth expecting some visible construction throughout your stay, even as dining, transportation, and other amenities continue operating normally.
