Lang Restaurant served its final customers Aug. 30, bringing to a close four decades of Vietnamese cuisine and hospitality in the Reading area.

Reading City Council President Donna Reed and Councilman O. Christopher Miller were among the many loyal customers who gathered for one last meal at the family-owned restaurant at 22 N. Sixth St.

The officials presented the Huynh family with a City Council commendation recognizing the restaurant’s 40 years of service and describing Lang as a remarkable culinary institution whose legacy reflected decades of dedication, passion and community spirit.

The restaurant traces its roots to Hong Thanh, the small family-owned eatery Lang Huynh opened at 10th and Chestnut streets in the mid-1980s.

Huynh, a Vietnamese immigrant, brought to the restaurant a distinctive culinary style that blended traditional Vietnamese recipes with French influences, creating food that was both authentic and refined, according to the commendation.

That approach and Huynh’s attention to detail remained central to Lang throughout its history, the councilors said.

Before his death at age 95 in March, Huynh oversaw the kitchen for nearly four decades, ensuring dishes were prepared with close attention to flavor and authenticity, the commendation noted.

Lang also developed a reputation for personal hospitality and a warm atmosphere incorporating elements of Vietnamese design.

Miller said several generations of family members, many with careers outside the restaurant, gathered to help prepare and serve food on Lang’s final day.

In announcing the closing this summer, the Huynh family recalled beginning with just 10 tables and a simple goal of sharing their family’s food and culture while creating a welcoming gathering place.

“What we didn’t fully realize back then was just how deeply you all would become a part of our family,” they wrote in a social media post.

City Council’s commendation emphasized Lang’s significance beyond its food, calling the restaurant a living testament to the resilience of immigrant entrepreneurs and the lasting influence of cultural heritage on the Reading community.
