TAZEWELL, Tenn. (WVLT/Gray News) – Tennessee authorities are investigating after they say a woman was caught on camera at a restaurant stealing from a donation jar that was meant to support an area animal shelter.
Tazewell Police Chief Jeremy Myers said the stolen money was in a jar for the Claiborne Animal Shelter at the La Esperanza Mexican restaurant.
Authorities noted the woman is also accused of paying for food at the restaurant with counterfeit money.
“She passed a counterfeit $100 bill and received cash back. The female left the restaurant without receiving her food,” Myers said. “But a review of the security camera footage showed the donation jar on the counter had been tampered with and about $50 was missing.”
Shelter representatives called the situation disappointing.
“As a donation-based shelter, these funds were meant to directly benefit the animals and their care,” Elaine Cass, with the shelter, said. “While this incident is disappointing, we remain grateful for the generosity and support shown at La Esperanza and in our community.”
Cass added that the animal care team at Claiborne Animal Shelter is continuing to provide services for the community.
“Every contribution is vital to our work, and we will continue to focus on providing the best possible care for the animals who depend on us,” she said. “We want to thank everyone who stands with us and reaffirms our commitment to serving both our animals and our community.”
Police said the woman was not immediately identified from the video as their investigation continues.
